The Lord To Suffer Many Things At
The Hands Of Men:
Matthew 9:14,15
NLT
14 One day the
disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked Him, “Why
don’t your disciples fast like we do and the Pharisees do?”
15 Jesus
replied, “Do wedding guests mourn while celebrating with The Groom?
Of course not. But someday The Groom will be taken away from them,
and then they will fast.
Mark 2:18-20 NLT
18 Once when
John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some people came
to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t your disciples fast like John’s
disciples and the Pharisees do?”
19 Jesus
replied, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with The Groom?
Of course not. They can’t fast while The Groom is with them.
20 But someday
The Groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
Luke 5:33-35 NLT
33 One day some
people said to Jesus, “John the Baptist’s disciples fast and pray
regularly, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. Why are your
disciples always eating and drinking?”
34 Jesus
responded, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with The
Groom? Of course not. 35 But someday The Groom will be taken away
from them, and then they will fast.”
Matthew 17:22,23
NLT
22 After they
gathered again in Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son Of Man is
going to be betrayed into the hands of His enemies.
23 He will be
killed, but on the third day He will be raised from the dead.” And
the disciples were filled with grief.
Luke 9:43,45 NLT
43 "...While
everyone was marveling at everything He was doing, Jesus said to His
disciples, 44 “Listen to Me and remember what I say. The Son Of Man
is going to be betrayed into the hands of His enemies.”
45 But they
didn’t know what He meant. Its significance was hidden from them,
so they couldn’t understand it, and they were afraid to ask Him
about it.
Mark 9:30-32 NLT
30 Leaving that
region, they traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn’t want anyone to
know He was there,
31 for He
wanted to spend more time with His disciples and teach them. He said
to them,
“The Son Of
Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of His enemies. He will be
killed, but three days later He will rise from the dead.”
32 They didn’t
understand what He was saying, however, and they were afraid to ask
Him what He meant.

Suffering and Death:
Luke 13:31-33 KJV
31
The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto Him,
Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.
32
And He said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out
devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I
shall be perfected.
33
Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day
following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.
Matthew 26:10-12 KJV
(Mark 14:6-9)
10
When Jesus understood it, He said unto them, Why trouble ye the
woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon Me.
11
For ye have the poor always with you; but Me ye have not always.
12
For in that she hath poured this ointment on My body, she did it for
My burial.
John 3:14,15 KJV
14
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must
The Son Of Man be lifted up:
15
That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal
life.
Luke 23:33 NLT (Matthew
27:35/ Mark 15:24)
When
they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed Him to the cross.
And the criminals were also crucified—one on His right and one on
His left.
Luke 23:46 NLT (Matthew
27:50/ Mark 15:37)
Then
Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust My Spirit into your hands!” And
with those words He breathed His last.
Luke 23:50-53 NLT
(Matthew 27:57-60/ Mark 15:42-46)
50
Now there was a good and righteous man named Joseph. He was a member
of the Jewish high council,
51
but he had not agreed with the decision and actions of the other
religious leaders. He was from the town of Arimathea in Judea, and he
was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come. 52 He went to Pilate and
asked for Jesus’ body.
53
Then he took the body down from the cross and wrapped it in a long
sheet of linen cloth and laid it in a new tomb that had been carved
out of rock.
Judas
To Betray His Master:
John
6:70,71 KJV
70
Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is
a devil?
71
He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that
should betray Him, being one of the twelve.
Matthew
26:1,2 KJV
1
And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, He
said unto His disciples,
2 Ye
know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and The Son Of
Man is betrayed to be crucified.
Matthew
26:1,3 KJV
21
And as they did eat, He said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you
shall betray Me.
23
And He answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with Me in the
dish, the same shall betray Me.
Matthew
26:25 KJV (Mark 14:18-21/ Luke 22:21,22/ John 13:10,21,26)
Then
Judas, which betrayed Him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He
said unto him, Thou hast said.
Matthew
26:47-50 KJV
47
And while He yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with
him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests
and elders of the people.
48
Now he that betrayed Him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall
kiss, that same is He: hold Him fast.
49
And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed
Him.
50
And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came
they, and laid hands on Jesus and took Him.
Disciples
Forsake Their Lord:
Matthew
26:31 KJV (Mark 14:27,28)
Then
saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of Me this
night: for it is written, I will smite The Shepherd, and the sheep of
the flock shall be scattered abroad.
John
16:32 KJV
Behold,
the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every
man to his own, and shall leave Me alone: and yet I am not alone,
because The Father is with Me.
Matthew
26:58 KJV
But
Peter followed Him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went
in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.
Peter
Denied His Lord:
Matthew
26:33,34 NLT (Mark 14:29,30/ Luke 22:33,34)
33
Peter declared, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I will never
desert you.”
34
Jesus replied, “I tell you The Truth, Peter—this very night,
before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even
know Me.”
John
13:37,38 NLT
37
“But why can’t I come now, Lord?” he asked. “I’m ready to
die for you.”
38
Jesus answered, “Die for Me? I tell you The Truth, Peter—before
the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that
you even know Me.
John
18:17 NLT
The
woman asked Peter, “You’re not one of that man’s disciples, are
you?”“No,” he said, “I am not.”
John
18:25,27 NLT
25
Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself,
they asked him again, “You’re not one of His disciples, are you?”
He denied it, saying, “No, I am not.”
26
But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the
man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you out
there in the olive grove with Jesus?”
27
Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.
Matthew
26:69-75 NLT (Mark 14:665-72/ Luke 22:56-62)
69
Meanwhile, Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl
came over and said to him, “You were one of those with Jesus the
Galilean.”
70
But Peter denied it in front of everyone. “I don’t know what
you’re talking about,” he said.
71
Later, out by the gate, another servant girl noticed him and said to
those standing around, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.”
72
Again Peter denied it, this time with an oath. “I don’t even know
The Man,” he said.
73 A
little later some of the other bystanders came over to Peter and
said, “You must be one of them; we can tell by your Galilean
accent.”
74
Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know The
Man!” And immediately the rooster crowed.
75
Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before
the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know Me.”
And he went away, weeping bitterly.
Christs'
Mocking, Scourging, Crucifixion, And Resurrection On The Third Day:
John
2:19 NLT
“All
right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I
will raise it up.”
Luke
11:29,30 NLT (Matthew 12:39,40)
29
As the crowd pressed in on Jesus, He said, “This evil generation
keeps asking Me to show them a miraculous sign. But the only sign I
will give them is the sign of Jonah.
30
What happened to him was a sign to the people of Nineveh that God had
sent him. What happens to The Son Of Man will be a sign to these
people that He was sent by God.
Mark
9:30,30 NLT
30
Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn’t
want anyone to know He was there,
31
for He wanted to spend more time with His disciples and teach them.
He said to them,
“The
Son Of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of His enemies. He
will be killed, but three days later He will rise from the dead.”
Matthew
17:22,23 NLT (Luke 9:44)
22
After they gathered again in Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son Of
Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of His enemies.
23
He will be killed, but on the third day He will be raised from the
dead.” And the disciples were filled with grief.
Mark
8:31,32 NLT (Matthew 16:21/ Luke 9:22)
31
Then Jesus began to tell them that The Son Of Man must suffer many
terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests,
and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days
later He would rise from the dead.
32
As He talked about this openly with His disciples, Peter took Him
aside and began to reprimand Him for saying such things.
Mark
9:9 NLT (Matthew 17:9)
As
they went back down the mountain, He told them not to tell anyone
what they had seen until The Son Of Man had risen from the dead.
Matthew
20:17-19 NLT (Mark 10:32-34/ Luke 18:31-34)
17
As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples
aside privately and told them what was going to happen to Him.
18
“Listen,” He said, “we’re going up to Jerusalem, where The
Son Of Man will be betrayed to the leading priests and the teachers
of religious law. They will sentence Him to die.
19
Then they will hand Him over to the Romans to be mocked, flogged with
a whip, and crucified. But on the third day He will be raised from
the dead.”
The
Condemnation:
Mark
14:53 NLT (Matthew 26;57/ Luke 22:54/ John 18:12,13)
They
took Jesus to the high priest’s home where the leading priests, the
elders, and the teachers of religious law had gathered.
Mark
14:55-65 NLT (Matthew 26:59-68/ Luke 22:63-71/ John 18:19-23)
55
Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying
to find evidence against Jesus, so they could put Him to death. But
they couldn’t find any.
56
Many false witnesses spoke against Him, but they contradicted each
other.
57
Finally, some men stood up and gave this false testimony:
58
“We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this Temple made with human
hands, and in three days I will build another, made without human
hands.’”
59
But even then they didn’t get their stories straight!
60
Then the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus,
“Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have
to say for yourself?”
61
But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked
Him, “Are you
The
Messiah, The Son Of The Blessed One?”
62
Jesus said, “I am. And you will see The Son Of Man seated in the
place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of
heaven.”
63
Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said,
“Why do we need other witnesses?
64
You have all heard His blasphemy. What is your verdict?” “Guilty!”
they all cried. “He deserves to die!”
65
Then some of them began to spit at Him, and they blindfolded Him and
beat Him with their fists. “Prophesy to us,” they jeered. And the
guards slapped Him as they took Him away.
Christ
Delivered To Gentile Authority:
Mark
15:1-5 NLT (Matthew 27:1,2,11-14/ Luke 23:1,3/ John 18:28-38)
1
Very early in the morning the leading priests, the elders, and the
teachers of religious law—the entire high council—met to discuss
their next step. They bound Jesus, led Him away, and took
Him to Pilate, the Roman
governor.
2
Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you The King Of The Jews?” Jesus
replied, “You have said it.”
3
Then the leading priests kept accusing Him of many crimes,
4
and Pilate asked Him, “Aren’t you going to answer them? What
about all these charges they are bringing against you?”
5
But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate’s surprise.
Christ's
Mocking And Scourging:
Luke
23:4-11 NLT
4
Pilate turned to the leading priests and to the crowd and said, “I
find nothing wrong with this Man!”
5
Then they became insistent. “But He is causing riots by His
teaching wherever He goes—all over Judea, from Galilee to
Jerusalem!”
6
“Oh, is He a Galilean?” Pilate asked.
7
When they said that He was, Pilate sent Him to Herod Antipas, because
Galilee was under Herod’s jurisdiction, and Herod happened to be in
Jerusalem at the time.
8
Herod was delighted at the opportunity to see Jesus, because he had
heard about Him and had been hoping for a long time to see Him
perform a miracle.
9 He
asked Jesus question after question, but Jesus refused to answer.
10
Meanwhile, the leading priests and the teachers of religious law
stood there shouting their accusations.
11
Then Herod and his soldiers began mocking and ridiculing Jesus.
Finally, they put a royal robe on Him and sent Him back to Pilate.
Mark
15:15-20 NLT (Matthew 27:26-31/ Luke 23:25/ John 19:1-16)
15
So to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered
Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned Him over to the
Roman soldiers to be crucified.
16
The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor’s
headquarters (called the Praetorium) and called out the entire
regiment.
17
They dressed Him in a purple robe, and they wove thorn branches into
a crown and put it on His head.
18
Then they saluted Him and taunted, “Hail! King Of The Jews!”
19
And they struck Him on the head with a reed stick, spit on Him, and
dropped to their knees in mock worship.
20
When they were finally tired of mocking Him, they took off the purple
robe and put His own clothes on Him again. Then they led Him away to
be crucified.
The
Crucifixion:
Mark
15:22-25 NLT (Matthew 27:33-35/ Luke 23:33,34/ John 19:17,18)
22 And they brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha (which means
“Place of the Skull”).
23 They offered Him wine drugged with myrrh, but He refused it.
24 Then the soldiers nailed Him to the cross. They divided His
clothes and threw dice to decide who would get each piece.
25 It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified Him.
Mark
15:29-32 NLT (Matthew 27:39-42/ Luke 23:35)
29
The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery.
“Ha! Look at you now!” they yelled at Him. “You said you were
going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days.
30
Well then, save yourself and come down from the cross!”
31
The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked Jesus.
“He saved others,” they scoffed, “but He can’t save Himself!
32
Let this Messiah, this King Of Israel, come down from the cross so we
can see it and believe Him!” Even the men who were crucified with
Jesus ridiculed Him.
The
Death Of Jesus:
Mark
15:37 NLT (Matthew 27:50/ Luke 23:46/ John 19:30)
Christ's
Burial:
Mark
15:42-46 NLT (Matthew 27:57-60/ Luke 23:50-53/ John 19:38-42)
42
This all happened on Friday, the day of preparation, the day before
the Sabbath. As evening approached,
43
Joseph of Arimathea took a risk and went to Pilate and asked for
Jesus’ body. (Joseph was an honored member of the high council, and
he was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come.) 44 Pilate couldn’t
believe that Jesus was already dead, so he called for the Roman
officer and asked if he had died yet.
45
The officer confirmed that Jesus was dead, so Pilate told Joseph he
could have the body.
46
Joseph bought a long sheet of linen cloth. Then he took Jesus’ body
down from the cross, wrapped it in the cloth, and laid it in a tomb
that had been carved out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone in front
of the entrance.
The
Resurrection:
Luke
24:1-7 NLT (Matthew 28:1-10/ Mark 16:1-8/ John 20:1-10)
1
But very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, taking
the spices they had prepared.
2
They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.
3 So
they went in, but they didn’t find the body of The Lord Jesus.
4 As
they stood there puzzled, two men suddenly appeared to them, clothed
in dazzling robes.
5
The women were terrified and bowed with their faces to the ground.
Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the dead for someone
who is alive?
6 He
isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what He told you
back in Galilee,
7
that The Son Of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men and
be crucified, and that He would rise again on the third day.”
The
Risen Christ Seen:
John
20:11-17 NLT
11
Mary (Magdalene) was standing outside the tomb crying, and as she
wept, she stooped and looked in.
12
She saw two white-robed angels, one sitting at the head and the other
at the foot of the place where the body of Jesus had been lying.
13
“Dear woman, why are you crying?” the angels asked her. “Because
they have taken away my Lord,” she replied, “and I don’t know
where they have put Him.”
14
She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but
she didn’t recognize Him.
15
“Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you
looking for?” She thought He was the gardener. “Sir,” she said,
“if you have taken Him away, tell me where you have put Him, and I
will go and get Him.”
16
“Mary!” Jesus said. She turned to Him and cried out, “Rabboni!”
(which is Hebrew for “Teacher”).
17
“Don’t cling to Me,” Jesus said, “for I haven’t yet
ascended to The Father. But go find My brothers and tell them, ‘I
am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’”
Luke
24:13-16 NLT
13
That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village
of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem.
14
As they walked along they were talking about everything that had
happened.
15
As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus Himself suddenly
came and began walking with them.
16
But God kept them from recognizing Him.
Luke
24:30,31 NLT
30
As they sat down to eat, He took the bread and blessed it. Then He
broke it and gave it to them.
31
Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him. And at
that moment He disappeared!
Luke
24:33-36 NLT
33
And within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. There
they found the eleven disciples and the others who had gathered with
them,
34
who said, “The Lord has really risen! He appeared to Peter.”
35
Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had appeared
to them as they were walking along the road, and how they had
recognized Him as He was breaking the bread.
36
And just as they were telling about it, Jesus Himself was suddenly
standing there among them. “Peace be with you,” He said.
John
20:24-28 NLT
24
One of the twelve disciples, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), was not
with the others when Jesus came.
25
They told him, “We have seen The Lord!” But he replied, “I
won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds in His hands, put my
fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in His side.”
26
Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time
Thomas was with them. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before,
Jesus was standing among them. “Peace be with you,” He said.
27
Then He said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at My
hands. Put your hand into the wound in My side. Don’t be faithless
any longer. Believe!”
28
“My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed.
Matthew
28:16-20 NLT
16
Then the eleven disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain
where Jesus had told them to go.
17
When they saw Him, they worshiped Him—but some of them doubted!
18
Jesus came and told His disciples, “I have been given all authority
in heaven and on earth.
19
Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them
in the name of
The
Father and The Son and The Holy Spirit.
20
Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.
And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the
age.”
John
21:1 NLT
Later,
Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This
is how it happened. (Read
the whole chapter.)
Acts
1:3 NLT
During
the forty days after He suffered and died, He appeared to the
apostles from time to time, and He proved to them in many ways that
He was actually alive. And He talked to them about the Kingdom of
God.
I
Corinthians 15:3-8 NLT3
I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been
passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures
said.
4 He
was buried, and He was raised from the dead on the third day, just as
the Scriptures said.
5 He
was seen by Peter and then by the Twelve.
6
After that, He was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one
time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died.
7
Then He was seen by James and later by all the apostles.
8
Last of all, as though I had been born at the wrong time, I also saw
Him.
Every word, our Lord, foretold of His life and death, became true,
and it did because...
John
14:6 KJV
Jesus
saith unto him, I am The way, The truth, and The life: no man cometh
unto The Father, but by Me.
