John 5:29

Bible Questions Answered:
“In John 5:29 Jesus said we are saved by good works...”
Brady/ Dublin, Ireland

Bible Answer:
Bible Text:
John 5:28,29 KJV
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear His voice,
29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

The context of these verses is The Truth of Christ's future coming as King Of Kings and Lord Of Lords, as Judge over the living and the dead.

Jesus was not discussing in particular, how to be “saved,” but rather His duties, one day as Judge over all the earth.

Christ's definition of how to be saved, how to be born again. Will it be by works? We have only to read His own words!

John 1:10-13 KJV
10 He came into the very world He created, but the world didn’t recognize Him.
11 He came to His own people, and even they rejected Him.
12 But to all who believed Him and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God.
13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.

John 3:1-21 KJV
1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto Him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a Teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou dust, except God be with Him.
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto Him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of The Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of The Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of The Spirit.
9 Nicodemus answered and said unto Him, How can these things be?
10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even The Son Of Man which is in heaven.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must The Son Of Man be lifted up:
15 That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of The Only Begotten Son Of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that Light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than Light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth The Light, neither cometh to The Light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth Truth cometh to The Light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Of course, it goes without saying, that to believe that Jesus Christ is God's Son, means one must live a life of obedience to Him! “Lord,” means master.

Luke 6:46 KJV
And why call ye Me, Lord, Lord*, and do not the things which I say?

*Lord-Greek: Kurios (Koo'-ree-os): Supreme in authority, master.

If we say that we are Christians, than Jesus is the Master of our life.

I Samuel 15:22 NLT
But Samuel replied,“What is more pleasing to The Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice,

The Lord Jesus Christ As Judge:

Daniel 7:9,10 NLT
9 I watched as thrones were put in place and the Ancient One sat down to judge. His clothing was as white as snow, His hair like purest wool. He sat on a fiery throne with wheels of blazing fire,
10 and a river of fire was pouring out, flowing from His presence. Millions of angels ministered to Him; many millions stood to attend Him. Then the court began its session, and the books were opened.

Matthew 25:31,32 KJV
31 When The Son Of Man shall come in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon The Throne Of His Glory:
32 And before Him shall be gathered all nations: and He shall separate them one from another, as a Shepherd divideth His sheep from the goats:

John 5:22 KJV
For The Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto The Son:

Acts 10:42 KJV
And He commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is He which was ordained of God to be The Judge of quick and dead.

Acts 17:31 KJV
Because He hath appointed a day, in the which He will Judge the world in righteousness by that Man whom He hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead.

Romans 2:16 NLT
And this is the message I proclaim—that the day is coming when God, through Christ Jesus, will judge everyone’s secret life.

Romans 14:10 KJV
But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before The Judgment Seat Of Christ.

II Timothy 4:1 KJV
I charge thee therefore before God, and The Lord Jesus Christ, who shall Judge the quick and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom;

Jude 14,15 KJV
14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, The Lord cometh with ten thousands of His saints,
15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.

That men are “not,” saved by works is seen again and again in The Word Of God.

Isaiah 64:6 KJV
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Romans 3:20-24,28 KJV
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24 Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Romans 5:1 KJV
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Galatians 2:16,21 KJV
16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

Ephesians 2:8,9 KJV
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is The Gift Of God (Jesus Christ):
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

II Timothy 1:9 KJV
Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

Titus 3:4,5,6 KJV
4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared,
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of The Holy Ghost;
6 Which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior;

I John 5:11 KJV
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

Dear friend, are you ready to stand before The Judge of all the earth?

Hebrews 9:27 KJV
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
