Curtain Of The Temple Torn In Two

Bible Questions Answered:
In Matthew 27:51 what is the meaning of the veil tearing?...”
Rujul/ New Delhi, India Delhi

Bible Answer:
Bible Text:
Matthew 27:45-51 NLT
45 At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock.
46 At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[j] lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”
47 Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought He was calling for the prophet Elijah.
48 One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to Him on a reed stick so He could drink.
49 But the rest said, “Wait! Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save Him.”
50 Then Jesus shouted out again, and He released His Spirit.
51 At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart,

In the Jewish temple, a large curtain separated The Holy Place from The Most Holy Place. The curtain was made of blue, purple and scarlet, it was a barrier to The Most Holy Place, and The Ark Of The Covenant, where was the presence of God.

Exodus 25:17-22 NLT
17 “Then make the Ark’s cover—the place of atonement—from pure gold. It must be 45 inches long and 27 inches wide. 18 Then make two cherubim from hammered gold, and place them on the two ends of the atonement cover.
19 Mold the cherubim on each end of the atonement cover, making it all of one piece of gold.
20 The cherubim will face each other and look down on the atonement cover. With their wings spread above it, they will protect it.
21 Place inside the Ark the stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant, which I will give to you. Then put the atonement cover on top of the Ark.
22 I will meet with you there and talk to you from above the atonement cover between the gold cherubim that hover over The Ark Of The Covenant. From there I will give you My commands for the people of Israel.

Exodus 26:31-34 NLT
31 “For the inside of the Tabernacle, make a special curtain of finely woven linen. Decorate it with blue, purple, and scarlet thread and with skillfully embroidered cherubim.
32 Hang this curtain on gold hooks attached to four posts of acacia wood. Overlay the posts with gold, and set them in four silver bases.
33 Hang the inner curtain from clasps, and put The Ark Of The Covenant in the room behind it. This curtain will separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place.
34 “Then put The Ark’s cover—the place of atonement—on top of The Ark Of The Covenant inside the Most Holy Place.

Only the High Priest entered into The Most Holy Place (Holy of Holies), and that once a year, to atone for the sins of himself and his people (Leviticus 16:11-14/ Leviticus 23:27).

Matthew 27:51 NLT
At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart,

This action, brought about by God, Himself, spoke that...
  • No longer did men need to go through a priest for atonement.
  • No longer did men need an earthly priest to intercede (mediate) for them!
  • No longer was the way to the presence of God, blocked, for now His presence was open to one and all!

Hebrews 2:17 NLT
Therefore, it was necessary for Him to be made in every respect like us, His brothers and sisters, so that He could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then He could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people.

Romans 3:25 NLT
For God presented Jesus as The Sacrifice For Sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed His life, shedding His blood..."

I Timothy 2:5,6 KJV
5 For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus;
6 Who gave Himself a ransom for all..."

Hebrews 4:14-16 NLT (The Lord Jesus Christ our High Priest.)
14 So then, since we have a Great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus The Son Of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe.
15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for He faced all of the same testings we do, yet He did not sin.
16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Hebrews 5:1-9 NLT
1 Every high priest is a man chosen to represent other people in their dealings with God. He presents their gifts to God and offers sacrifices for their sins.
2 And he is able to deal gently with ignorant and wayward people because he himself is subject to the same weaknesses.
3 That is why he must offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as theirs.
3 That is why he must offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as theirs.
4 And no one can become a high priest simply because he wants such an honor. He must be called by God for this work, just as Aaron was.
5 That is why Christ did not honor Himself by assuming He could become High Priest. No, He was chosen by God, who said to Him, “You are My Son. Today I have become your Father.”
6 And in another passage God said to Him, “You are a Priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”
7 While Jesus was here on earth, He offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the One who could rescue Him from death. And God heard His prayers because of His deep reverence for God.
8 Even though Jesus was God’s Son, He learned obedience from the things He suffered.
9 In this way, God qualified Him as a perfect High Priest, and He became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him.

Hebrews 6:18-20 NLT
18 So God has given both His promise and His oath...we who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.
19 This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.
20 Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our Eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews 7:24-27 KJV
24 But this Man (Jesus Christ), because He continueth ever, hath an unchangeable Priesthood.
25 Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.
26 For such an High Priest became us, who is Holy, Harmless, Undefiled, Separate from sinners, and made Higher than the heavens;
27 Who needeth not daily, as those (earthly) high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this He did once, when He (Christ) offered up Himself.

Hebrews 8:1 KJV
Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an High Priest, who is set on the right hand of The Throne Of The Majesty in the heavens;

Hebrews 9:14,15,24 NLT
14...Christ offered Himself to God as a Perfect Sacrifice for our sins.
15 That is why He is the One who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.
24 For Christ did not enter into a holy place made with human hands, which was only a copy of the true one in heaven. He entered into heaven itself to appear now before God on our behalf.

James 4:8 KJV
Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you..."

I John 2:1,2 NLT
1 My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate who pleads our case before The Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous.
2 He Himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.

John 3:14-21 KJV
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must The Son Of Man be lifted up:
15 That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of The Only Begotten Son Of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that Light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than Light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the Light, neither cometh to the Light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth Truth cometh to The Light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
