Matthew 10:34

Bible Questions Answered:
“How is it Jesus both be peace and sword?”
Gugu/ Gauteng, Sandton (South Africa)

Bible Answer:
Bible Text:
Matthew 10:34 KJV
Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

Isaiah spoke of The Messiah, The Lord Jesus Christ as The....
Isaiah 9:6 KJV
For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father,
The Prince Of Peace.

Jesus taught...
Matthew 5:9 KJV
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

At our Lord's birth, the angels announced peace and good will.

Luke 2:13,14 KJV Angels make announcement to the Shepherds.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Jesus said
John 14:27 KJV
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

The Apostle Paul spoke of the gospel as ….
Ephesians 6:15 KJV
And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Knowing all this, how then can The Lord send a sword, which takes away peace?

Matthew 10:34-39 KJV
34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword*.
35 For I am come to set a man at variance* against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
37 He that loveth father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.
38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after Me, is not worthy of Me.
39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for My sake shall find it.

*Sword-Greek: Machaira (Makh-ahee-rah): A knife; figurative-war, judicial punishment:-sword.

*Variance-Greek: Diehazo (Dee-khad-zo): To make apart, i.e. sunder (figuragive-alienate: set at variance.

Both of these two words, sword, and variance, speak of division and separation.

Luke 12:51-53 KJV
51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.
53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

(Peace, individually, yes, corporately, no! There is no universal peace,  because the godless world denies Him.)

Homily:
A doctor uses a scalpel (sword) to separate the cancer from the body. And he does so, to save the life of the patient.

II Corinthians 6:17,18 KJV
17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith The Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be My sons and daughters, saith The Lord Almighty.

Jesus Christ and His gospel of righteousness, love and mercy, separates people, which is division. Not that this is anything longed for, it is the result of light casting out darkness.

Many do not wish to follow Jesus Christ and His teachings because....

John 3:19-21 KJV
19 And this is the condemnation, that Light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than Light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth The Light, neither cometh to The Light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth Truth cometh to The Light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

I Corinthians 7:15 KJV
"...God hath called us to peace.

Mark 8:34 KJV
And when He had called the people unto Him with His disciples also, He said unto them,
Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
