Bible Lesson: Parables-Our Lord's: The Wine Bottles.
Bible Lesson: Parables-Our Lord's:
The Wine Bottles.
Occasion: New And Old, Cannot
Be Mixed.
Lesson:
New And Old, Cannot Be Mixed.
Bible Text:
Matthew 9:17 KJV (Mark 2:22/ Luke
5:37)
“And no one puts new wine into old
wine skins. For the old skins would burst from the pressure, spilling
the wine and ruining the skins. New wine is stored in new wine skins
so that both are preserved.”
Preceding verses:
Matthew 9:9-12 NLT (Christ's
call of Matthew.)
9 As Jesus was walking along, He saw
a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow
Me and be My disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and
followed Him.
10 Later, Matthew invited Jesus and
His disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax
collectors and other disreputable sinners.
11 But when
the Pharisees saw
this, they asked His disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with
such scum?”
12 When Jesus heard this, He said,
“Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.”
13 Then He added, “Now go and
learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not
offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they
are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”
14 One day the disciples of John
the Baptist came to Jesus and asked him, “Why don’t your
disciples fast like we do and the Pharisees do?”
The Pharisees, tried to trap Jesus. And
Jesus in response to them, told three parables concerning spiritual
liberty through faith in Christ, versus the law and a religion of
works. The parable about the marriage celebration, the parable about
patching an old garment with new cloth, and now this parable
concerning storing wine in wine bottles. (Find all these parables of
our Lord – on The Bible Prayer Line – View A List Of
Subjects.)
Matthew 9:17 KJV
“And no one puts new wine into old
wine skins. For the old skins would burst from the pressure, spilling
the wine and ruining the skins. New wine is stored in new wine skins
so that both are preserved.”
New wine, is grape
juice that is in the process of fermentation. Sugar and yeast
enhance the juice to become alcohol. Then there is the aging of the
wine, during this time the wine expands in its chemical process.
New wine, that is
but beginning to ferment, could ever be placed within old bottles
(skins), because of the wines expansion, and the old bottles loss of
elasticity over time, new wine would burst them, and all would be
lost.
New wine must be
placed with new bottles (skins), because both have the ability to
expand and contract together.
The Pharisees and
their religion of works, and self-righteousness, could never swallow,
a Gospel for sinners, who humbly, and meekly receive The Savior. The
Savior who alone has procured salvation for repentant sinners,
something they could never imbibe, no matter how hard they might try.
The old and the
new, either one holds to the old, or one holds to the new. To hold to
the old way of trying to keep the law, always ended in failure,
versus faith in Christ, and His finished work of salvation.
And today the
choices remains the same. Oh how many a soul, steeped in religious
ritual, pomp and
circumstance,
prides himself on his religious accomplishments. Surely after death,
he will be WELL received. But little doth he realize his way of
stubbornness, and rebellion leads to HELL.
I Samuel
15:22,23 KJV
22 And Samuel said, Hath The Lord as
great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in
obeying the voice of The Lord?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat
of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of
witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry..."
Psalm 51:16,17
KJV
16 For thou desirest not sacrifice;
else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a
broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not
despise.
Proverbs 21:3
NLT
The Lord is more
pleased when we do what is right and just than when we offer Him
sacrifices.
Ecclesiastes 5:1
KJV
Keep thy foot when thou goest to the
house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice
of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.
Isaiah
1:11-13;18,19 KJV
11 To what purpose is the multitude
of your sacrifices unto Me? saith The Lord: I am full of the burnt
offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in
the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
12 When ye come to appear before Me,
who hath required this at your hand, to tread My courts?
13 Bring no more vain oblations;
incense is an abomination unto Me; the new moons and Sabbaths, the
calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the
solemn meeting.
18 Come now, and let us reason
together, saith The Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall
be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be
as wool.
19 If ye be willing and obedient.."
Hosea 6:6 NLT
I want you to show love, not offer
sacrifices. I want you to know Me more than I want burnt offerings.
Matthew 7:21 KJV
Not every one that saith unto Me,
Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth
the will of My Father which is in heaven.
John 14:21 KJV
He that hath My commandments, and
keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall be
loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to
him.
Romans 14:17 NLT
For the Kingdom of God is not a
matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and
peace and joy in The Holy Spirit.
Hebrews 10:6-10
KJV
6 You were not pleased with burnt
offerings or other offerings for sin.
7 Then I said, ‘Look, I have come
to do your will, O God— as is written about Me in the Scriptures.’”
8 First, Christ said, “You did not
want animal sacrifices or sin offerings or burnt offerings or other
offerings for sin, nor were you pleased with them” (though they are
required by the law of Moses).
9 Then He said, “Look, I have come
to do your will.” He cancels the first covenant in order to put the
second into effect.
10 For God’s will was for us to be
made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all
time.
John 14:6 KJV
Jesus saith unto him, I am The Way,
The Truth, and The Life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.
Acts 4:10-12 KJV
10 "...Jesus Christ of
Nazareth...whom God raised from the dead..."
11 This is The Stone which was set
at nought of you builders, which is become The Head Of The Corner.
12 Neither is there salvation in any
other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men,
whereby we must be saved.
Romans 5:8,9 KJV
8 But God commendeth His love toward
us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Much more then, being now
justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through
Him.
I Thessalonians
5:9 KJV
For God hath not appointed us to
wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
Hebrews 10:19,20
NLT
19 And so, dear brothers and
sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of
The Blood Of Jesus.
20 By His death, Jesus opened a new
and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place.
