Whited Sepulchers

Bible Questions Answered:
“Jesus told the Scribes and Pharisees, that they were like sepulchers, because they were evil...”
Renita/ Mexico City, Mexico

Bible Answer:

Matthew 23;27,28 KJV (Be sure to read the whole chapter.)
27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

Jewish custom was that, one month before Passover, graves must be whitened.
Graves of course were located everywhere, along roadsides, in fields, on hills etc.

The Jews accomplished this by using a bright chalk.
This was extremely important because to come upon an grave, i.e. to touch it, meant that one was then ceremonially unclean.

The chalk would speak loudly of the one who had so inadvertently come against it, for his clothing would show of the white chalk.

Our Lord taught the Scribes and Pharisees, that though they whitened sepulchers (tombs), yet this did not change their contents, for in them were unclean dead men's bones.

Matthew 23:28 KJV
Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

No one knew the heart of the Scribes and Pharisees, better than God.
Jesus told them, you “appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.”

Their lives were filled with the Law, their customs, and rituals, but they had no spiritual, life giving relationship with God. Their lives were of hypocrisy and iniquity, they claimed to know God, but they did not, and so they lead others astray. The blind leading the blind.

Jesus had taught earlier saying:

Matthew 7:16-23 KJV
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

21 Not every one that saith unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven;
but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity.

Who is God's servant?  Verse 21 “he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven.”
Prophecy, exorcisms, wonderful works, in the name of the Lord, do they bring salvation?”
No! Verse 21 “he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven.”

Customs and rituals, shows of religious works however grand and ecclesiastically uplifting,
do not make one a child of God!
Verse 21
Not every one that saith unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven;
but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven.

What is the “will,” of the Father in heaven?

Isaiah 64:6 KJV
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Ephesians 2:8,9 KJV
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works (including righteous works), lest any man should boast.

Proverbs 28:13 KJV
He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

Romans 3:23 KJV
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

I John 1:8-10 KJV
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

Romans 10:9 KJV
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Micah 7:19 KJV
He will turn again, He will have compassion upon us; He will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.
