Bible Lesson: Miracles Of The Old Testament: Language Diversified

Bible Lesson: Miracles Of The Old Testament: Language Diversified.

Occasion: To Execute The Forsaken Command Of God.

Location: Babel (The land of Shinar,  Babylonia.)

Bible Text:

Genesis 11:1-9 NLT
1 At one time all the people of the world spoke the same language and used the same words.
2 As the people migrated to the east, they found a plain in the land of Babylonia and settled there.
3 They began saying to each other, “Let’s make bricks and harden them with fire.” (In this region bricks were used instead of stone, and tar was used for mortar.)
4 Then they said, “Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.”
5 But the Lord came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building.
6 “Look!” He said. “The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them!
7 Come, let’s go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won’t be able to understand each other.”
8 In that way, the Lord scattered them all over the world, and they stopped building the city.
9 That is why the city was called Babel, because that is where the Lord confused the people with different languages. In this way He scattered them all over the world.

Genesis 11:1 NLT
At one time all the people of the world spoke the same language and used the same words.

What would it be like if all the nations of earth, spoke but one language? Really it would be wonderful.          No translators needed, one could travel almost anywhere and never have any trouble understanding someone.

Actually this was God's plan for man, “if,” he had been obedient to His call. Unfortunately man is prone to sin, and not listening to the call of God.

The people in question, were the descendants (100 year survivors) of the flood.
The callings of God had been forsaken.

What was it the Word said?

Exodus 23:2 KJV
Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil..."

Jeremiah 4:22 NLT
“My people are foolish and do not know Me,” says the Lord. “They are stupid children who have no understanding. They are clever enough at doing wrong, but they have no idea how to do right!”

Jeremiah 17:9 KJV
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Galatians 6:7 KJV
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Only the one, who truly stays near the Lord, knows right from wrong.

Psalm 25:4,5 KJV
4 Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.
5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.

Psalm 119:9-12 KJV
9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
12 Blessed art thou, O Lord: teach me thy statutes.

Psalm 139:23,24 KJV
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Genesis 11:2 NLT
As the people migrated to the east, they found a plain in the land of Babylonia and settled there.

This seems rational, and just, except one thing, it was the opposite to what God had called them to do.

Gods Commission:
Genesis 1:28 NLT
Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it..."

They were not to “settle,” they were to “fill the earth.”

Sinful man, needs no help to rationalize his way of doing things, all while thinking himself, perfectly Godly, in the process.
And things are no different today.

Matthew 24:37 KJV
But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 KJV
He hath made every thing beautiful in His time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.

Ephesians 8:14 KJV
Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

Romans 1:21 KJV
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Genesis 11:3,4 KJV
3 They began saying to each other, “Let’s make bricks and harden them with fire.” (In this region bricks were used instead of stone, and tar was used for mortar.)
4 Then they said, “Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.”

These people had come from the Mountain (Ararat) to the plains, and now they wished to settle down with homes and a tower that would reach to the sky.

Some think, that perhaps the wish for the tower was that of protection, in case there was another flood.
Then again, most certainly it was a matter of pride, and rebellion, for they said “keep us from being scattered all over the world.”

Whatever the reason, it was in total opposition to God's calling for them, as a people.

Isaiah 12:2 KJV
For the day of the Lord of Hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:

Isn't it curious, just how much energy some have when it comes to doing things rebellious and out of the will of God, while for doing the will of God, many become completely lethargic.
The answer of course is that the nature of man, is that of a “fallen nature.”

Romans 7:18-21 KJV
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

Genesis 11:5 NLT
But the Lord came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building.

What a terrible mistake for man to ever think that God, does not see the affairs of mankind!

Genesis 6:5 KJV
And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Genesis 16:13 KJV (Hagar)
"...Thou God seest me..."

II Samuel 22:28 NLT
You rescue the humble, but your eyes watch the proud and humiliate them.

II Chronicles 16:9 KJV
For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew Himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward Him..."

Psalm 11:4 NLT
But the Lord is in His holy Temple; the Lord still rules from heaven. He watches everyone closely, examining every person on earth.

Psalm 34:15 KJV
The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and His ears are open unto their cry.

Jeremiah 16:17 KJV
For Mine eyes are upon all their ways: they are not hid from My face, neither is their iniquity hid from Mine eyes.

Jeremiah 32:19 KJV
Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

Zechariah 4:1,2,10 NLT
1 Then the angel who had been talking with me returned and woke me, as though I had been asleep.
2 “What do you see now?” he asked. I answered, “I see a solid gold lamp stand with a bowl of oil on top of it. Around the bowl are seven lamps, each having seven spouts with wicks.
10 "...(The seven lamps represent the eyes of the Lord that search all around the world.)

Genesis 11:6 NLT
“Look!” He said. “The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them!

God's original plan, yes, would have meant that man “with God,” could do the very impossible.
Lost, all lost, because man in sin, could “not,” know the blessing of God.
To have blessed man at the tower, would have made God a partaker of man's sin, and God cannot even look at sin.

Psalm 99:9 KJV
Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at His holy hill; for the Lord our God is holy.

Isaiah 6:3 KJV (Seraphim)
And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of Hosts: the whole earth is full of His Glory.

Habakkuk 1:13 KJV
Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity..."

Revelation 15:4 KJV
Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.

Genesis 11:7-9 NLT
7 Come, let’s go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won’t be able to understand each other.”
8 In that way, the Lord scattered them all over the world, and they stopped building the city.
9 That is why the city was called Babel, because that is where the Lord confused the people with different languages. In this way He scattered them all over the world.

Oh the loving kindness of God. He will not allow mankind to go onto ruin. The judgments of God, are His kindness to stop man, to turn him around into the direction he should be going. The direction that leads to life, joy and, all blessing.

Psalm 117:2 KJV
For His merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.

Psalm 119:71-77 KJV
71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.
72 The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.
73 Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.
74 They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in thy word.
75 I know, O Lord, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.
76 Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant.
77 Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight.

Isaiah 54:8 KJV
In a little wrath I hid My face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer.

Joel 2:12,13 NLT
12 That is why the Lord says, “Turn to Me now, while there is time. Give Me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning.
13 Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.” Return to the Lord your God, for He is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.

Jonah 4:2 KJV (Jonah)
And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

Ephesians 2:7 KJV
That in the ages to come He might shew the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

Titus 3:4 KJV
But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,

Dear friend, do you realize that the God of Babel, is also the God of Pentecost?
What determines Babel, from Tongues of praise and worship?

Noah's descendants refused to obey God.
And not all of Jerusalem was in the upper room at Pentecost, and wonder of wonders, they still are not.
Men, and their dispositions, determine, blessing or cursing.

Proverbs 18:21 KJV
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Tongues that Babel:
Genesis 11:9 NLT
That is why the city was called Babel, because that is where the Lord confused the people with different languages. In this way He scattered them all over the world.

Tongues that Praise: (At Pentecost some 18 different sects present.)
Acts 2:11
"...we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

Jeremiah 4:3,4 NLT
3 This is what the Lord says to the people of Judah and Jerusalem (God's people):
“Plow up the hard ground of your hearts! Do not waste your good seed among thorns.
4 O people of Judah and Jerusalem, surrender your pride and power. Change your hearts before the Lord, or My anger will burn like an unquenchable fire because of all your sins.

Hosea 10:12-14 NLT
12 I said, ‘Plant the good seeds of righteousness, and you will harvest a crop of love. Plow up the hard ground of your hearts, for now is the time to seek the Lord,
that He may come and shower righteousness upon you.’
13 “But you have cultivated wickedness and harvested a thriving crop of sins. You have eaten the fruit of lies trusting in your military might, believing that great armies could make your nation safe.
14 Now the terrors of war will rise among your people. All your fortifications will fall..."

Babel, or Pentecost, which do you choose?

Let there be “no,” doubt, what the mind of the Lord is in this late harvest hour!

Mark 16:15-20 KJV
15 And He said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them;
they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, He was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
