Bible Lesson: Church Symbol-Chi Rho

Bible Lesson: Symbols Of The Church Of Jesus Christ

Church Symbol: Xp: Chi-Rho

Xp are the first two Greek letters in the word,"(Krist) Christ."

Xp: (Christos)The anointed, i.e. the Messiah-Jesus the Christ.

Among the Jews, Priests and Kings were anointed.
Psalm 105:15 KJV "Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm."

John 1:41 KJV "He (Andrew) first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ."

Psalm 45:7 KJV "Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, Thy God, hath anointed Thee with the oil of gladness above Thy fellows."

Isaiah 61:1 KJV (Be sure to read the whole chapter on the blessing of the Messiah.)
(The Messiah's Calling-speaking of Christ.)
"The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me; because the LORD hath anointed Me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He hath sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;"

Luke 4:18-21 KJV (Jesus said of Himself....)
[18] The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
[19] To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
[20] And He closed the book, and He gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on Him.
[21] And He began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

Acts 4:27 KJV "...thy Holy Child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed,..."

Acts 10:38 KJV "...God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him."

Christ, the Messiah:

Matthew 16:16 KJV "And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Luke 2:11 KJV "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord."

John 11:27 KJV "She (Martha) saith unto Him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world."

I John 5:1 KJV "Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth Him that begat loveth Him also that is begotten of Him."

Christ as Prophet:

Matthew 21:11 KJV "And the multitude said, This is Jesus the Prophet of Nazareth of Galilee."

Mark 6:15 KJV "Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a Prophet, or as one of the prophets."

Luke 7:16 KJV "And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great Prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited His people."

Luke 24:19 KJV "And He (the risen Lord)said unto them, What things? And they (Cleo pas) said unto Him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:"

John 7:37-41 KJV
[37] In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink.
[38] He that believeth on Me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
[39] (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
[40] Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.
[41] Others said, This is the Christ..."

Christ as Priest:

Hebrews 2:17 KJV "Wherefore in all things it behoved Him to be made like unto His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people."

Hebrews 4:14-16 KJV
[14] Seeing then that we have a great High Priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
[15] For we have not an High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
[16] Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 5:5,6 KJV
[5] So also Christ glorified not Himself to be made an High Priest; but He (God the Father) that said unto Him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
[6] As He saith also in another place, Thou art a Priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Hebrews 6:18-20 NLT
18 So God has given both His promise and His oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.
19 This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God's inner sanctuary.
20 Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews 7:24-28 KJV
[24] But this Man, because He continueth ever, hath an unchangeable Priesthood.
[25] Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.
[26] For such an High Priest became us, who is Holy, Harmless, Undefiled, Separate from sinners, and made Higher than the heavens;
[27] Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this He did once, when He offered up Himself.
[28] For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is Consecrated for evermore.

Hebrews 8:1 KJV "Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an High Priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;"

Christ as King:

Isaiah 9:7 KJV "Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this."

Jeremiah 23:5 KJV "Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a Righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth."

Daniel 7:14 KJV "And there was given Him Dominion, and Glory, and a Kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve Him: His Dominion is an Everlasting Dominion, which shall not pass away, and His Kingdom that which shall not be destroyed."

John 1:49 KJV "Nathanael answered and saith unto Him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel."

John 18:37 KJV "Pilate therefore said unto Him, Art thou a King then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a King. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth My voice."

I Corinthians 15:25 KJV "For He must reign, till He hath put all enemies under His feet."

I Timothy 6:15 KJV "Which in His times He shall shew, who is the Blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

Revelation 1:5 KJV "And from Jesus Christ, who is the Faithful Witness, and the First Begotten of the dead, and the Prince of the Kings of the earth. Unto Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood,"

Revelation 17:14 KJV "...He is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with Him are called, and chosen, and faithful."

Revelation 19:16 KJV "And He hath on His vesture and on His thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."

Do you know this anointed Prophet, Priest, and King?
He came to be "your" Saviour!
