Bible Lesson: Church Symbol-The Candle

Symbols Of The Church Of Jesus Christ

Symbols Of The Church Of Jesus Christ

Church Symbol: The Candle

The Candle, emblem of Jesus Christ, "The Light of the world."

John 1:1-9 KJV
[1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
[2] The same was in the beginning with God.
[3] All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made.
[4] In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.
[5] And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
[6] There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
[7] The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through Him might believe.
[8] He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
[9] That was the True Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

John 8:12 KJV "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the Light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the Light of life."

John 9:5 KJV "As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the world."

I John 1:5 KJV "This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all."

Revelation 21:23 KJV "And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof."

Psalms 18:28 KJV "... the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness."

Matthew 5:14-16 KJV
[14] Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
[15] Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
[16] Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Moses, was shown on the mount, the description of the "Candlestick (Actually lamp stand), that would be placed within the Tabernacle.

Exodus 25:31-37 KJV
[31] And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same.
[32] And six branches shall come out of the sides of it; three branches of the candlestick out of the one side, and three branches of the candlestick out of the other side:
[33] Three bowls made like unto almonds, with a knop and a flower in one branch; and three bowls made like almonds in the other branch, with a knop and a flower: so in the six branches that come out of the candlestick.
[34] And in the candlestick shall be four bowls made like unto almonds, with their knops and their flowers.
[35] And there shall be a knop under two branches of the same, and a knop under two branches of the same, and a knop under two branches of the same, according to the six branches that proceed out of the candlestick.
[36] Their knops and their branches shall be of the same: all it shall be one beaten work of pure gold.
[37] And thou shalt make the seven lamps thereof: and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it.

For those who believe in God, Candle Light has always stood for the Divine Presence of God, and the presence of the risen Christ.

Revelations 1:12-18 KJV
[12] And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks (In this case, the candlesticks represented the churchs);
[13] And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
[14] His head and His hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and His eyes were as a flame of fire;
[15] And His feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and His voice as the sound of many waters.
[16] And He had in His right hand seven stars: and out of His mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and His countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
[17] And when I (John) saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. And He laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the First and the Last:
[18] I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

1 John 1:5-10 KJV
[5] This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.
[6] If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
[7] But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
[8] If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
[9] If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.
[10] If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and his word is not in us.

When we see the candle, in our stained glass windows, and at the altar of our church, how thankful we should be that, the light (of God-has) shined in (a world of) darkness.
