Abram And Hagar
Bible Questions Answered:
“Was it right that Abraham slept with
Hagar?”
Shelby/ Brisbane, Australia,
(Queensland)
Bible Answer:
No, it was not right.
Genesis 16:1-5 KJV
1 Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no
children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold
now, The Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in
unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And
Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
3 And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar
her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of
Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.
4 And he went in unto Hagar, and she
conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was
despised in her eyes.
5 And Sarai said unto Abram, My
wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she
saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the Lord
judge between me and thee.
Abram had, before been promised by
God...
Genesis 15:1-6 KJV
1 After these things the word of
the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am
thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
2 And Abram said, Lord God, what
wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house
is this Eliezer of Damascus?
3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou
hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.
4 And, behold, the word of The Lord
came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he
that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.
5 And he brought him forth abroad,
and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able
to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
6 And he believed in The Lord; and
He counted it to him for righteousness.
Just as Adam had
listened to the voice of his wife, and eaten of the forbidden fruit,
Abram, listen to his wife. No doubt Abram and Sarai, reasoned because
of their age, certainly God must have had something else in mind.
Sarai, reasoned that she and Abram, could have children through her
handmaid Hagar. In their day, Eastern Codes suggest this may have
been the custom of some ( such as the Hammurabi Code.)
Abraham knew this
was not right, i.e. having a child by means of polygamy. For since
the beginning whereupon God instituted the institution of marriage,
one man and one wife was God's plan!
Genesis 2:23,24
KJV
23 And Adam said, This is now bone
of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.
24 Therefore shall a man leave his
father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall
be one flesh.
Matthew 19:4-6
KJV (Jesus)
4 And He answered and said unto
them, Have ye not read, that He which made them at the beginning made
them male and female,
5 And said, For this cause shall a
man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they
twain shall be one flesh?
6 Wherefore they are no more twain,
but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man
put asunder.

In Genesis,
marriage is defined by God as being heterosexual monogamy, this has
always been His plan!
Proverbs 5:15-23
NLT
15 Drink water from
your own well—share your love only with your wife.
16 Why spill the
water of your springs in the streets, having sex with just anyone?
17 You should
reserve it for yourselves. Never share it with strangers.
18 Let your wife
be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your
youth.
19 She is a loving
deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts satisfy you always. May you
always be captivated by her love.
20 Why be
captivated, my son, by an immoral woman, or fondle the breasts of a
promiscuous woman?
21 For The Lord
sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes.
22 An evil man is
held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him.
23 He will die for
lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his great
foolishness.
Hebrews 13:4 NLT
Give honor to marriage, and remain
faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who
are immoral and those who commit adultery.
Genesis
18:10-14 NLT (Theophany
-
The Pr-Incarnate Lord Jesus.)
10 Then one of them said, “I will
return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will
have a son!” Sarah was listening to this conversation from the
tent.
11 Abraham and Sarah were both very
old by this time, and Sarah was long past the age of having children.
12 So she laughed silently to
herself and said, “How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such
pleasure, especially when my master—my husband—is also so old?”
13 Then The Lord said to Abraham,
“Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Can an old woman like me
have a baby?’
14 Is anything too hard for
The Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah
will have a son.”
Genesis 21:1-3,5
NLT
1 The Lord kept His word and did for
Sarah exactly what He had promised.
2 She became pregnant, and she gave
birth to a son for Abraham in his old age. This happened at just the
time God had said it would.
3 And Abraham named their son Isaac.
5 Abraham was 100 years old when
Isaac was born. (Sarah, herself
was some 90 years young.)
When we do
things God's way, there are blessings, and eternal rewards!
Hebrews 11:8-12
KJV
8 By faith Abraham, when he was
called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an
inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
9 By faith he sojourned in the land
of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with
Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
10 For he looked for a city which
hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
11 Through faith also Sara herself
received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when
she was past age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.
12 Therefore sprang there even of
one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in
multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
