Judgment

Bible Questions Answered:
“What does Luke 17:37 mean, or what is the meaning?”
Rahul/ Bangalore, India

Bible Answer:
Bible Text:
Luke 17:37 KJV
And they answered and said unto Him, Where, Lord? And He said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.

*Eagles-Aetos (Ah-et-os): An eagle (from its wind-like flight): eagle.
Some Bible commentators have translated this word as being a vulture or Jackal.

No matter, for all are birds of prey. And yet, there remains a jarring truth, that must not be overlooked!
The Roman army had as its ensign, the eagle, and as history tells us, Titus in 70 A.D. Destroyed Jerusalem! Surely the eagle had been a harbinger of death and destruction!

But, to what than does this verse refer?
For that, we must read the preceding words of our Lord.

Acts 17:20-37 KJV
20 And when He was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, He answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within* you.

*Within- Some translations state this word as being “among,” rather than “within.”
(As Jesus was among them.)

22 And He said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and ye shall not see it.
23 And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them.
24 For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of Man be in His day.
25 But first must He suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.

26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of Man.
27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.

28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built;
29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.
31 In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.
32 Remember Lot's wife.
33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.
34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.
35 Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
36 Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
37 And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.

These verses speak of coming judgment.
Christ depicted Jerusalem as a rotting putrefied carcase, of self righteousness, and dead religious works.
With eagles circling over head as a message to one and all, here within is death, here within is judgment.

Judgment would be both, swift, and deadly.
It was true for Jerusalem, and it will also be true of those living in the “last days.”
A time when riches, intoxication, reveling, and immorality, will be without limit or rebuke.

Our Lord gave 7 fateful signs of the approach of eagles:

Luke 17:

21-23
Appearance of False Christs.
Matthew 24:26 KJV
Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

26
Signs of open sin as in Noah's day.
Genesis 6:5-8 KJV
5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6 And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at His heart.
7 And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth Me that I have made them.
8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

28
Signs of open sin as in Lot's day.
Jude 1:7 KJV
And don’t forget Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, which were filled with immorality and every kind of sexual perversion. Those cities were destroyed by fire and serve as a warning of the eternal fire of God’s judgment.

31
No time to pack.
No time to travel back home.
I Corinthians 15:52 KJV
It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye,

32
Remember Lot's wife, (Luke 17:32 KJV) Jesus said.
Lot's wife having love for the things left behind, looked back, (longed to go back) to Sodom.
Swift and final was her judgment.
(Read the story in Genesis 19.)

34
Two men in bed.
One taken, the other left.
I Corinthians 15:52 KJV
It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye,

35
Two women working.
One taken, the other left.
I Corinthians 15:52 KJV
It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye,

Judgment swift, and without recourse.

Matthew 16:24-26 KJV
24 Then said Jesus unto His disciples, If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for My sake shall find it.
26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

I John 2:15-17 KJV
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Luke 17:24 KJV
For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of Man be in His day.

This description will be true for both the Rapture of the Church, and that of the Second Coming of Christ.

I Corinthians 15:51-58 NLT (Rapture of the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. See also I Thessalonians 4:13-18.)
51 But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed!
52 It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed.
53 For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies.
54 Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory.
55 O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
56 For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power.
57 But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.

Hebrews 3:15 KJV
While it is said, To day if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts..."

II Corinthians 6:2 KJV
(For He saith,...behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)
