Bible Lesson: Answered Prayer: The Disciples Prayed To The Lord For Guidance.
Bible Lesson: Answered Prayer:
The Disciples Prayed To The Lord For Guidance.
Subject Of Prayer: Judas' Empty
Position Needed To Be Filled By Another.
Bible Text:
Acts 1:12-26 NLT (Matthias
Replaces Judas)
12 Then the apostles returned to
Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of half a mile.
13 When they arrived, they went to
the upstairs room of the house where they were staying.
Here are the names of those who were
present: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew,
Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the Zealot), and Judas (son
of James).
14 They all met together and were
constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus,
several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.
15 During this time, when about 120
believers were together in one place, Peter stood up and addressed
them.
16 “Brothers,” he said, “the
Scriptures had to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided those who
arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by The Holy Spirit,
speaking through King David.
17 Judas was one of us and shared in
the ministry with us.”
18 (Judas had bought a field with
the money he received for his treachery. Falling headfirst there, his
body split open, spilling out all his intestines.
19 The news of his death spread to
all the people of Jerusalem, and they gave the place the Aramaic name
Akeldama, which means “Field of Blood.”)
20 Peter continued, “This was
written in the book of Psalms, where it says, ‘Let his home become
desolate, with no one living in it.’ It also says, ‘Let someone
else take his position.’
21 “So now we must choose a
replacement for Judas from among the men who were with us the
entire time we were traveling with The Lord Jesus— (Apostolic
Qualifications.)
22 from the time He was baptized
by John until the day He was taken from us. Whoever is chosen
will join us as a witness of Jesus’ resurrection.”
23 So they nominated two men: Joseph
called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.
24 Then they all prayed, “O Lord,
you know every heart. Show us which of these men you have chosen
25 as an apostle to replace Judas in
this ministry, for he has deserted us and gone where he belongs.”
26 Then they cast lots, and Matthias was selected to become an
apostle with the other eleven.
Judas
one of the twelve, a man whom Jesus had called friend (Matthew 26:50)
had betrayed his Lord. David had prophesied this some 1,000 years
before.
Psalms 41:9 KJV
Yea, mine own familiar friend, in
whom I trusted, which did eat of My bread, hath lifted up his heel
against Me.
Also prophesied in
the book of Psalms
Psalm 108:6-8
KJV
6 Set thou a wicked man over him:
and let Satan stand at his right hand.
7 When he shall be judged, let him
be condemned: and let his prayer become sin.
8 Let his days be few; and let
another take his office.
Judas was out, and
another needed to fill his place.
Acts 1:21-23 NLT
21 “So now we must choose a
replacement for Judas from among the men who were with us the
entire time we were traveling with The Lord Jesus— (Apostolic
Qualifications.)
22 from the time He was baptized
by John until the day He was taken from us (Ascension).
Whoever is chosen will join us as a witness of Jesus’
resurrection.”
23 So they nominated two men: Joseph
called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.
Acts 1:24-26 NLT
24 Then they all prayed, “O
Lord, you know every heart. Show us which of these men you have
chosen
25 as an apostle to replace Judas in
this ministry, for he has deserted us and gone where he belongs.”
26 Then they cast lots, and Matthias was selected to become an
apostle with the other eleven.
The people of God, prayed earnestly, waiting upon The Lord, and they
used the Old Testament custom of casting lots, and the lot, fell upon
Matthias.
Leviticus 16:8 KJV
And Aaron
shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for The Lord, and the
other lot for the scapegoat.
Numbers 34,13 KJV
And Moses
commanded the children of Israel, saying, This is the land which ye
shall inherit by lot, which The Lord commanded to give unto the nine
tribes, and to the half tribe:
I Chronicles 24:5 KJV
Thus were
they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the
sanctuary, and governors of the house of God, were of the sons of
Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.
I Chronicles 25:8 KJV
And they cast
lots, ward against ward, as well the small as the great, the teacher
as the scholar.
In today's church, after much prayer, a ballot would be used, to know
The Lord's will.
God answered their prayer!
Back in the days of John The Baptist, when Christ was baptized by
John, little did anyone realize a young man named Matthias, standing
and prayerfully watching the events, but God did!
He would be the answer to 11 disciples prayer. The God who we serve
is called Jehovah Jireh
Genesis 22:13,14 NLT
13 Then
Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So
he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his
son.
14 Abraham
named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “The Lord will provide”).
To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the
mountain of The Lord it will be provided.”
Dear friend, the Living God who saw Matthias, sees you, and He has a special plan
and place for you, and you may know it by praying in faith, to The
Savior, He is ...
