Bible Text:
Luke 20:1-8 KJV
1 And it came to pass, that on one
of those days, as He taught the people in the temple, and preached
the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon Him with the
elders,
2 And spake unto Him, saying, Tell
us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is
he that gave thee this
authority?
3 And He answered and said unto
them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer Me:
4 The baptism of John, was it from
heaven, or of men?
5 And they reasoned with themselves,
saying, If we shall say, From heaven; He will say, Why then believed
ye him not?
6 But and if we say, Of men; all the
people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.
7 And they answered, that they could
not tell whence it was.
8 And Jesus said unto them, Neither
tell I you by what authority I do these things.
The Pharisees, and
the scribes had rejected Jesus, and He told them...
Matthew 23:33
KJV
Ye serpents, ye generation of
vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
They had come to
try and trap Jesus, forcing Him to answer for the things which He had
done.
Luke 19:45-48
KJV (Mark 11:15-33)
45 And He went into the temple,
and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that
bought;
46 Saying unto them, It is written,
My house is The House Of Prayer: but ye have made it a den of
thieves.
47 And He taught daily in the
temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of
the people sought to destroy Him,
48 And could not find what they
might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear Him.
Luke 20:1,2 KJV

of those days, as He taught the people in the temple, and preached
the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon Him with the
elders,
2 And spake unto Him, saying, Tell

The Chief Priests, scribes and, elders, questioned The Lord's, God
given authority to do the things He did, such as cleansing the
temple, and teaching in the temple court.
Jesus had a question for them. Seeing how they were questioning His
God given authority, He would ask them a question
concerning God's authority.
Luke 20:3,4 KJV
3 And He answered and said unto
them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer Me:
4 The baptism
of John, was it from heaven, or of men?
Luke 20:5-8 KJV
(The Scribes, Pharisees and,
Elders.)
5 And they reasoned with themselves,
saying, If we shall say, From heaven; He will say, Why then
believed ye him not?
6 But and if we say, Of men;
all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a
prophet.
7 And they answered, that they
could not tell whence it was.
8 And Jesus
said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these
things.
The Scribes, Pharisees and, Elders, openly admitted they could not
tell when a work was from God or not!
Knowing
this, Jesus said to their question (“...Tell us, by
what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee
this authority?)
If you
cannot tell by what authority John baptized....
...Neither tell I you by what
authority I do these things.
They had already made up their minds about Jesus, and plotted to kill
Him.
Nothing can convince a person, whose mind is made up to reject The
Savior!
Abraham told the rich man in hell, concerning his brothers...
Luke 16:31 KJV
And he said
unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they
be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
Matthew 7:28,29
KJV
28 And it came
to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were
astonished at His doctrine:
29 For He
taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
Matthew 28:18
KJV
And Jesus came
and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto Me in heaven
and in earth.
Mark 1:27 KJV
And they were
all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying,
What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority
commandeth He even the unclean spirits, and they do obey Him.
John 5:26,27 KJV
26 For as The
Father hath life in Himself; so hath He given to The Son to have life
in Himself;
27 And hath
given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is
The Son Of Man.
