Bible Lesson: Miracles Of The Old Testament: The Steps Of The Sundial Reversed By Ten Degrees.
Bible Lesson: Miracles Of The Old
Testament: The Steps Of The Sundial Reversed By Ten Degrees.
Occasion: Proof Of Isaiah's
Words.
Location: Jerusalem.
Bible Text:
II Kings 20:1-11 NLT
1 About that time Hezekiah became
deathly ill, and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to visit him. He
gave the king this message: “This is what The Lord says: Set your
affairs in order, for you are going to die. You will not recover from
this illness.”
2 When Hezekiah heard this, he
turned his face to the wall and prayed to The Lord,
3 “Remember, O Lord, how I have
always been faithful to you and have served you single-mindedly,
always doing what pleases you.” Then he broke down and wept
bitterly.
4 But before Isaiah had left the
middle courtyard, this message came to him from The Lord:
5 “Go back to Hezekiah, the leader
of My people. Tell him, ‘This is what The Lord, the God of your
ancestor David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I
will heal you, and three days from now you will get out of bed and go
to the Temple of The Lord.
6 I will add fifteen years to your
life, and I will rescue you and this city from the king of Assyria. I
will defend this city for My own honor and for the sake of My servant
David.’”
7 Then Isaiah said, “Make an
ointment from figs.” So Hezekiah’s servants spread the ointment
over the boil, and Hezekiah recovered!
8 Meanwhile, Hezekiah had said to
Isaiah, “What sign will The Lord give to prove that He will heal me
and that I will go to the Temple of The Lord three days from now?”
9 Isaiah replied, “This is the
sign from The Lord to prove that He will do as He promised. Would you
like the shadow on the sundial to go forward ten steps or backward
ten steps?”
10 “The shadow always moves
forward,” Hezekiah replied, “so that would be easy. Make it go
ten steps backward instead.”
11 So Isaiah the prophet asked The
Lord to do this, and He caused the shadow to move ten steps backward
on the sundial of Ahaz!
II Chronicles
32:24 NLT
24 About that
time Hezekiah became deathly ill. He prayed to The Lord, who healed
him and gave him a miraculous sign.
Isaiah 38:1-8
NLT (Hezekiah’s Sickness and Restoration)
1 About that time Hezekiah became
deathly ill, and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to visit him. He
gave the king this message: “This is what The Lord says: ‘Set

turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord,
3 “Remember, O Lord, how I have

4 Then this message came to Isaiah
from The Lord:
5 “Go back to Hezekiah and tell
him, ‘This is what The Lord, the God of your ancestor David, says:
I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I will add fifteen
years to your life,
6 and I will rescue you and this
city from the king of Assyria. Yes, I will defend this city.
7 “‘And this is the sign from
The Lord to prove that He will do as He promised:
8 I will cause the sun’s shadow to
move ten steps backward on the sundial of Ahaz!’” So the shadow
on the sundial moved backward ten steps.
II Kings 20:1
NLT
About that time Hezekiah became
deathly ill, and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to visit him. He
gave the king this message: “This is what The Lord says: Set your
affairs in order, for you are going to die. You will not recover from
this illness.”
Why, oh why had
this sickness unto death, come to the Godly King, King Hezekiah?
The Jews
believed...
Proverbs 10:27 KJV
The fear of The
Lord prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
Certainly this was the work of the devil, for King Hezekiah was only 41 years old.
John 10:10 KJV
The thief
cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am
(Jesus Christ) come that they might have life, and that they might
have it more abundantly.
I John 3:8 KJV
He that
committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the
beginning. For this purpose The Son Of God was manifested, that He
might destroy the works of the devil.
We know this was the work of the enemy, because of the
simple fact, that if King Hezekiah would die, he would die without a
son, and the line to the Messiah would be broken.
Oh the wisdom of the enemy, never, never under estimate him, he is not God, but he is not stupid either!
But...
I John 4:4 KJV
"...
greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.
II Kings 20:2-7
NT
2 When Hezekiah heard this, he
turned his face to the wall and prayed to The Lord,
3 “Remember, O Lord, how I have
always been faithful to you and have served you single-mindedly,
always doing what pleases you.” Then he broke down and wept
bitterly.
4 But before Isaiah had left the
middle courtyard, this message came to him from The Lord:
5 “Go back to Hezekiah, the
leader of My people. Tell him, ‘This is what The Lord, the God of

My servant David.’”
7 Then Isaiah said, “Make an
ointment from figs.” So Hezekiah’s servants spread the ointment
over the boil, and Hezekiah recovered!
The God who hears and answers prayer, would be faithful to His Word,
and to His people!
Jeremiah 29:13
KJV
And ye shall
seek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for Me with all your
heart.
Joel 2:32 KJV
And it shall
come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of The Lord shall
be delivered..."
Matthew 6:6 KJV
But thou, when
thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy
door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which
seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
Matthew 7:7,8
KJV
7 Ask, and it
shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be
opened unto you:
8 For every one
that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that
knocketh it shall be opened.
John 15:7 KJV
If ye abide in
Me, and My words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it
shall be done unto you.
II Kings 20:8-11
NLT
8 Meanwhile,
Hezekiah had said to Isaiah, “What sign will The Lord give to prove
that He will heal me and that I will go to the Temple of The Lord
three days from now?”
9 Isaiah
replied, “This is the sign from The Lord to prove that He will do
as He promised. Would you like the shadow on the sundial to go
forward ten steps or backward ten steps?”
10 “The shadow
always moves forward,” Hezekiah replied, “so that would be easy.
Make it go ten steps backward instead.”
11 So Isaiah the
prophet asked The Lord to do this, and He caused the shadow to move
ten steps backward on the sundial of Ahaz!
God answered Isaiah's prayer.
What actually happened?
The shadow of the sundial, reversed itself by some 10 degrees.
How could this be? The earth could have reversed itself on its axis.
Some believe that God, simply stopped the earth from spinning on its
axis.
One day we will know for sure.
Thee all important thing to realize today is....
Genesis 18:14
KJV
Is any thing
too hard for The Lord?..."
Our God is not only the Creator of the universe and everything in it,
but also healer, and Savior of the soul of mankind.
Our Lord's promise...
Jeremiah 33:17
NLT
For this is
what The Lord says: David will have a descendant sitting on the
throne of Israel forever.
Satan thought for sure, the Davidic Kingly line could be broken and
that the promise of The Lord, could be made untrue, but he is a liar.
John 8:44 KJV
"...the
devil,...He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in The
Truth, because there is no Truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he
speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
Saints of The Lord, may we always rest in our God's promises, He
alone is The Way, The Truth, and The Life.
I Kings 8;56 KJV
Blessed be The
Lord, that hath given rest unto His people Israel (God's people),
according to all that He promised: there hath not failed one word of
all His good promise, which He promised..."
Psalm 34:19 KJV
Many are the
afflictions of the righteous: but The Lord delivereth him out of them
all.
Isaiah 43:1-3
KJV
1 But now thus
saith the Lord that created thee...and He that formed thee...Fear
not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou
art Mine.
2 When thou
passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the
rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the
fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon
thee.
3 For I am The
Lord thy God, The Holy One Of Israel, thy Savior:
Revelation
21:3,4 KJV
3 And I heard a
great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is
with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people,
and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God.
4 And God shall
wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more
death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more
pain: for the former things are passed away.
