Can you tell me just what exactly was the Sanhedrin?

In our day ( i.e. the United States), we have the Supreme Court, the highest court of the land, in Jesus day it was the Sanhedrin, or Jewish Council.

The Sanhedrin consisted of some seventy elders, men of higher education or learning, e.g. High Priests, Lawyers, Elders (Both Pharisees and Sadducees).
They could decide most cases except those of life and death, this Rome would not allow.

Jesus was called before this body as a “false prophet.”
John 11:47 KJV
46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

The Sanhedrin, also branded as deceivers, Peter, John, Stephen, and Paul.

The Sanhedrin, was fashioned after Moses' council of seventy elders.

Numbers 11:16,17 KJV
16 And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.
17 And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the Spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.

Some have thought that the Apostle Paul (Saul), himself, at one time, may have been a member of the Sanhedrin, having been taught by Gamaliel, a doctor of the Jewish law, and a one time president of the council.

Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;

Deuteronomy 17:6,7 KJV
6 At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.
7 The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So thou shalt put the evil away from among you.

18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.
19 And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus.
20 And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.
21 But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?
22 But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.
23 And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him:
24 But their laying await was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him.
