Bible Lesson: Nations And Their Downfall

Bible Lesson: Nations And Their Downfall:

Hosea: A prophet of Israel, B.C. 784-725.
Hosea tells of the things that led to Israel's and Judah's destruction.

* Hosea 12:1 NLT
The people of Israel feed on the wind; they chase after the east wind all day long.
They pile up lies and violence; they are making an alliance with Assyria while sending olive oil to buy support from Egypt.

Deceitful leaders.
Violence.
Alliances with godless nations.

II Samuel 23:3 KJV
The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.

Psalm 2:10-12 KJV
10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and ye perish from the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him.

* Hosea 4:2 NLT
You make vows and break them; you kill and steal and commit adultery.
There is violence everywhere— one murder after another.

Broken vows
Murder
Theft
Adultery
Violence

II Timothy 3:1-4 KJV
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

Matthew 24:38,39 KJV
38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be.

Hosea 5:10 NLT
The leaders of Judah have become like thieves. So I will pour My anger on them like a waterfall.

Psalm 11:6 KJV
Upon the wicked He shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.

* Hosea 4:8 NLT
When the people bring their sin offerings, the priests get fed. So the priests are glad when the people sin!

Instead of fasting and prayer the spiritual leaders have given themselves over to the desires of the flesh.

I Corinthians 9:13,14 KJV
13 Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

James 3:1 KJV
My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

* Hosea 2:5 NLT
Their mother is a shameless prostitute and became pregnant in a shameful way.
She said, ‘I’ll run after other lovers and sell myself to them for food and water,
for clothing of wool and linen, and for olive oil and drinks.’

In their rebellion, Israel longed for the idol worship (Baal), food, clothing and enjoyments of surrounding godless nations.

I John 2:15-17 KJV
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Matthew 16:26 KJV
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Luke 21:34-36 KJV
34 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.
35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.
36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

Colossians 3:2 KJV
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Titus 2:11,12 KJV
11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

* Hosea 12:8 NLT
Israel boasts, “I am rich! I’ve made a fortune all by myself! No one has caught me cheating!
My record is spotless!”

I Samuel 2:3 KJV
"...the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed."

Jeremiah 17:10 KJV
I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

Hosea 7:8,9 NLT
8 “The people of Israel mingle with godless foreigners, making themselves as worthless as a half-baked cake!
9 Worshiping foreign gods has sapped their strength, but they don’t even know it.
Their hair is gray, but they don’t realize they’re old and weak.

Hosea 8:7 NLT
They have planted the wind and will harvest the whirlwind.
The stalks of grain wither and produce nothing to eat.
And even if there is any grain, foreigners will eat it.

National and spiritual blindness, gave Israel, a false sense of confidence.

Hosea 10:9,10 NLT
9 The Lord says, “O Israel...
10 ...I will call out the armies of the nations to punish you for your multiplied sins."

Only judgment awaits, a rebellious people, who have forgotten their God.

Proverbs 11:21 KJV
Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.

I Thessalonians 5:2,3 KJV
2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

Galatians 6:7,8 KJV
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

Ephesians 5:15,16 KJV
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Isaiah 59:14 KJV
And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.

Revelation 6:15-17 KJV
15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17 For the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Proverbs 14:34 KJV
Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

* Hosea 6:1-3 NLT (Hosea's call to return to the Lord.)
1 “Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces; now He will heal us.
He has injured us; now He will bandage our wounds.
2 In just a short time He will restore us, so that we may live in His presence.
3 Oh, that we might know the Lord! Let us press on to know Him.
He will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains in early spring.”

Hosea 10:12 NLT
"...Plant the good seeds of righteousness, and you will harvest a crop of love.
Plow up the hard ground of your hearts, for now is the time to seek the Lord, that He may come and shower righteousness upon you."

II Chronicles 7:14 KJV
If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Proverbs 28:13 KJV
He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

I John 1:8-10 KJV
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and his word is not in us.
