Bible Lesson: Miracles Of The Old Testament: Axe Head Floats On The Water.

Bible Lesson: Miracles Of The Old Testament: Axe Head Floats On The Water.

Occasion: Miracle Needed-Miracle Supplied.

Location: Jordan.

Bible Text:
II Kings 6:1-7 NLT (Axe Head Floats.)
1 One day the group of prophets came to Elisha and told him, “As you can see, this place where we meet with you is too small.
2 Let’s go down to the Jordan River, where there are plenty of logs. There we can build a new place for us to meet.”
All right,” he told them, “go ahead.”
3 “Please come with us,” someone suggested. “I will,” he said.
4 So he went with them. When they arrived at the Jordan, they began cutting down trees.
5 But as one of them was cutting a tree, his axe head fell into the river. “Oh, sir!” he cried. “It was a borrowed axe!”
6 “Where did it fall?” the man of God asked. When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it into the water at that spot. Then the axe head floated to the surface.
7 “Grab it,” Elisha said. And the man reached out and grabbed it.

II Kings 6:1-2 NLT
1 One day the group of prophets came to Elisha and told him, “As you can see, this place where we meet with you is too small.
2 Let’s go down to the Jordan River, where there are plenty of logs. There we can build a new place for us to meet.”
All right,” he told them, “go ahead.”

The school of the prophets (Perhaps from Jericho.) was growing, and the room they had was no longer sufficient for the expanded group.

So they asked Elisha, if it wouldn't be a good idea, to add on to the building they had. Elisha also thought it was a good idea, and so he said yes!

Then the prophets of Jericho, had a second request....and that request was that they deeply wished Elisha to come along with them.
No, they didn't want Elisha to work on the building, they wanted him along for another reason.
The prophets wanted the man of God along, so that their work would be blessed!

II Kings 6:3 NLT
Please come with us,” someone suggested. “I will,” he said.

In America, (because that is where this Blog emanates from) men of God were once so revered, and rightly so.

It used to be that men of the cloth (clergy), were held of highest esteem of all professions (not that the ministry, is a profession).

Today, the top 10 list of professions is as follows:
  1. Fire Fighter
  2. Scientist
  3. Teacher
  4. Doctor
  5. Military Officer
  6. Nurse
  7. Police Officer
  8. Clergy
  9. Farmer
  10. Engineer

The prophets of Jericho, had faith in the man of God, Elisha, and God honored their faith, and respect for the servant of The Lord.

II Kings 6:4,5 NLT
4 So he went with them. When they arrived at the Jordan, they began cutting down trees.
5 But as one of them was cutting a tree, his ax head fell into the river. “Oh, sir!” he cried. “It was a borrowed ax!”

The Prophets were rich in the things of God, but poor in earthly wealth. The axe head, was borrowed.
An axe was not something a prophet could afford and so it was begged for and that for only a little while. No wonder the sheer horror, at seeing it fly into the muddy Jordan water!

II Kings 6:6,7 NLT
6 “Where did it fall?” the man of God asked. When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it into the water at that spot. Then the ax head floated to the surface.
7 “Grab it,” Elisha said. And the man reached out and grabbed it.

Axe heads, made of iron, do not float in the water!
For such a thing to happen, and it did, meant it going against the very “laws of nature.

But isn't that just what miracles are?

Genesis 18:10-15 KJV (The Lord speaking to Abraham. Theophany.)
10 And He (The Pre-incarnate Son Of God) said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.
11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.
12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?
13 And The Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?
14 Is any thing too hard for The Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And He said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.

Abraham was 100 years old, and his wife Sarah was 90 years old. Did they have a son? Yes, and of course they named him Isaac (laughter).

Question: Is any thing too hard for The Lord?
Answer: Of course not!

The miraculous, is only “ordinary, “ to our supernatural God!

If you can't preform miracles, than do what you can do, ….

Mark 11:22 KJV
And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

Have faith in the God of miracles!

Matthew 11:2-5 KJV
2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
3 And said unto Him, Art thou He that should come, or do we look for another?
4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

John 2:10,11 KJV
10 And saith unto Him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth His glory; and His disciples believed on Him.

John 3:2 KJV
1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto Him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with Him.

John 7:31 NLT
Many among the crowds at the Temple believed in Him. “After all,” they said, “would you expect The Messiah to do more miraculous signs than this Man has done?”

John 10:25,38 KJV
25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in My Father's name, they bear witness of Me.
38 But if I do, though ye believe not Me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that The Father is in Me, and I in Him.

John 20:30,31 KJV
30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book:
31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is The Christ, The Son Of God; and that believing ye might have life through His name.

Dear friend, let's have Faith In Our Miraculous God!

Matthew 19:26 KJV
But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Mark 9:23 KJV
Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

Mark 10:27 KJV
And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

Matthew 8:13 KJV
And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.
