-Bible Lesson- Miracles Of The Power Of The Holy Spirit- Elymas the sorcerer stricken with blindess

Bible Lesson: Miracles Of The Power Of The Holy Spirit: Elymas, the sorcerer stricken with blindess.

God's Messenger: The Apostle Paul.

Bible Location: Paphos.

Bible Text: Acts 13:4-12 NLT
4 So Barnabas and Saul were sent out by the Holy Spirit. They went down to the seaport of Seleucia and then sailed for the island of Cyprus.
5 There, in the town of Salamis, they went to the Jewish synagogues and preached the word of God. John Mark went with them as their assistant.
6 Afterward they traveled from town to town across the entire island until finally they reached Paphos, where they met a Jewish sorcerer, a false prophet named Bar-Jesus.
7 He had attached himself to the governor, Sergius Paulus, who was an intelligent man. The governor invited Barnabas and Saul to visit him, for he wanted to hear the word of God.
8 But Elymas, the sorcerer (as his name means in Greek), interfered and urged the governor to pay no attention to what Barnabas and Saul said. He was trying to keep the governor from believing.
9 Saul, also known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he looked the sorcerer in the eye.
10 Then he said, “You son of the devil, full of every sort of deceit and fraud, and enemy of all that is good! Will you never stop perverting the true ways of the Lord?
11 Watch now, for the Lord has laid his hand of punishment upon you, and you will be struck blind. You will not see the sunlight for some time.” Instantly mist and darkness came over the man’s eyes, and he began groping around begging for someone to take his hand and lead him.
12 When the governor saw what had happened, he became a believer, for he was astonished at the teaching about the Lord.

In the Antioch church five men were known as prophets and teachers, of the first three prophets, the last two teachers.

Acts 13:1-3 NLT
1 Among the prophets and teachers of the church at Antioch of Syria were Barnabas, Simeon (called “the black man”), Lucius (from Cyrene), Manaen (the childhood companion of King Herod Antipas), and Saul.
2 One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Dedicate Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them.”
3 So after more fasting and prayer, the men laid their hands on them and sent them on their way.

Barnabas, and Saul, were on their first missionary journey, having been called and set apart for the ministry by the Holy Spirit. And they were not alone for a young man named John Mark (a nephew of Barnabas),  accompanied them.

Leaving Antioch, they set sail form Seleucia to the island of Cyprus, the south-eastern city of Salamis. Once there they began preaching the word of God, in Jewish synagogs.

Paul and Barnabas preached their way to the western part of Cyprus  (no less than some 100 miles). It was there at the western capital city of Paphos, where they met a Jew by the name Bar-Jesus, a sorcerer,
and Sergius Paulus the  Roman Magistrate of the country.

Bar-Jesus was both adviser, and magician to Sergius Paulus.
Having heard of Paul and Barnabas, Sergius Paulus, sent for them to hear their preaching.
No doubt he asked them many questions.

Acts 13:8 NLT
But Elymas, the sorcerer (as his name means in Greek), interfered and urged the governor to pay no attention to what Barnabas and Saul said. He was trying to keep the governor from believing.

Where ever the work of God, certainly the enemy will appear with his opposition!

John 10:10 KJV
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy:

Elymas, not wanting anyone else to be a counselor to the Roman Magistrate, so he warned him not to listen to what Paul and Barnabas had to say.

Acts 13:9-11 NLT
9 Saul, also known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he looked the sorcerer in the eye.
10 Then he said, “You son of the devil, full of every sort of deceit and fraud, and enemy of all that is good! Will you never stop perverting the true ways of the Lord?
11 Watch now, for the Lord has laid his hand of punishment upon you, and you will be struck blind. You will not see the sunlight for some time.” Instantly mist and darkness came over the man’s eyes, and he began groping around begging for someone to take his hand and lead him.

The Apostle Paul filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, said to Elymas the sorcerer ...
10...“You son of the devil, full of every sort of deceit and fraud, and enemy of all that is good! Will you never stop perverting the true ways of the Lord?
11 Watch now, for the Lord has laid his hand of punishment upon you, and you will be struck blind. You will not see the sunlight for some time.

And the results of this judgment were immediate, total blindness.
The God, the Apostle spoke of was alive all powerful, and ready to answer prayer.
Sergius Paulus believed the gospel!

Acts 13:12 NLT
When the governor saw what had happened, he became a believer, for he was astonished at the teaching about the Lord.

I John 3:8 KJV
"...For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil."

Archeological Cyprian inscriptions have been excavated, showing that Sergius Paulus was numbered with the belivers*.

*Cobern, The New Archeological Discoveries, 538-540.

Opposition, by Satan and his emissaries, must not detour us from preaching and teaching the wonderful Word of God! There are so many hungry souls in the world waiting to hear the truth of the gospel, as was Sergius Paulus.

Luke 10:19 KJV
"Behold, I give unto you power...over all the power of the enemy..."

I John 4:4 KJV
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Revelation 12:11 KJV
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony..."
