Bible Questions Answered: Lazarus

Bible Questions Answered:
Pastor, I am wondering just who Lazarus was, that Jesus would weep so at his death?
Thomas/ London, United Kingdom

Bible Answers:

Lazarus of Bethany (John 11:1), was the brother of Mary, and Martha, and at who's home, our Lord often stayed at, while preaching in Judea. Martha, Mary and Lazarus were very close friends of the Lord.

John chapter eleven tells the story of how Lazarus became sick and died.

In John 11:35 we see the great love of Jesus for His friends.
Jesus wept.”

Today, so many openly declare, their great love for others, ah but their love is shallow, for their eyes betray them.
Oft in the eyes of Jesus were tears.
And no, this was “not,” thee only occasion that they were there, for those who would even hint so, are deluded, for Jesus was a man of tears and prayer, on behalf of His people.

Hebrews 4:15 KJV (Our true friend, and heavenly High Priest, is...)
"... touched with the feeling of our infirmities..."

Hebrews 5:5-10 KJV
5 So also Christ glorified not Himself to be made an High Priest; but He that said unto Him, Thou art My Son, to day have I begotten thee.
6 As He saith also in another place, Thou art a Priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
7 Who in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto Him that was able to save Him from death, and was heard in that He feared;
8 Though He were a Son, yet learned He obedience by the things which He suffered;
9 And being made perfect, He became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him;
10 Called of God an High Priest after the order of Melchisedec.

Luke 19:41,42 KJV
41 And when He was come near, he beheld the city (Jerusalem), and wept over it,
42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

Proverbs 17:17 KJV
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Proverbs 18:24 KJV
"... there is a Friend that sticketh closer than a brother."

Proverbs 27:6 KJV
Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

In His love for Lazarus, and for His people, the Saviour called Lazarus, back from the dead, showing to all that He was the Resurrection and the Life.

Tradition says Lazarus was approximately 30 years of age, at that time, and that he lived on for another 30 years.
It is said that Lazarus was an apostle in France. In France he founded a church, became a bishop, and that after many years was martyred. Many churches in France are named after Lazarus, such as St. Lazare located at Paris.

In John 11:3 is a most important verse.
“Therefore his sisters sent unto Him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.”

Oh, dear friend, as Lazarus of old, your are loved of the Lord!
Despite all our faults and failures, our Lord, our true friend, will love us until the end!

Deuteronomy 7:8 KJV
But because the LORD loved you, and because He would keep the oath which He had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

everlasting love: therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee.

John 15:9;12-14 KJV
9 As the Father hath loved Me, so have I loved you: continue ye in My love.
12 This is My commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 Ye are My friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

Romans 5:8 KJV
But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 8:35-39 KJV
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Galatians 2:20 KJV
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me.

Ephesians 2:4,5 KJV
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

I John 3:1,16 KJV
1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew Him not.
16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because He laid down His life for us...

Are you living for the one who loves you so much, He took your place in judgment and death?
