Bible Questions Answered: Veneration

Bible Questions Answered:
Why did the woman with the issue of blood grab for the garments of Christ? And what then is the answer concerning the Shroud of Turin?
Tony/ Naples, Italy

Bible Answers:

Text:
Mark 5:25-34 KJV
25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,
26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched His garment.
28 For she said, If I may touch but His clothes, I shall be whole.
29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.
30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that virtue had gone out of Him, turned Him about in the press, and said, Who touched My clothes?
31 And His disciples said unto Him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched Me?
32 And He looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before Him, and told Him all the truth.
34 And He said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

Jesus was on His way to Jairus' house, when this sick woman approached Him. She had but one idea in mind and it was to touch the garment of Jesus.

Why would she wish to do that?
She would do that because...

1) She could not attend public worship in the temple.
2) She was considered to be “Levitically,” unclean (Leviticus 15:25.)
3) She was also barred from her relatives.

What did she think was special about the garments of Jesus?
In her day, the Jewish people, believed a certain sacredness was about the garments of the prophets.

Veneration: A feeling of deep respect and reverence (acts of showing this.)
(New World Dictionary of American English.)

Should veneration, be shown articles of faith?
Right about now, some are falling off their chairs, shouting, absolutely not!
But then again, you would be the “first,” to be hard pressed to explain ….

I Kings 19:19,20 KJV
19 So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.
20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah..."

II Kings 2:8-15 KJV
8 And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.
9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.
13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;
14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.
15 And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

Veneration, when it means objects, handled with respect, and faith, sacred, this is the proper definition, never ever does it under any circumstances should it mean, worship (adoration), or treated as an object that itself is God!

The woman with the issue of blood, upon being healed...
Mark 5:33,34 KJV
33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and
fell down before Him, and told Him all the truth.
34 And He said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

1)She in her worship and thanksgiving, fell down before Jesus.
2) She made confession of what God had done.

First Commandment:

Exodus 20:3-6 KJV
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me;
6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love Me, and keep My commandments.

Did the early church, believe in veneration?
Yes.

Acts 19:11,12 NLT
11 God gave Paul the power to perform unusual miracles.
12 When handkerchiefs or aprons that had merely touched his skin were placed on sick people, they were healed of their diseases, and evil spirits were expelled.

Well, why, don't we see things like this today?

Friends, let us reflect for one moment.
God's followers have lost some things over the many years, and with them the miraculous as well.

The old proverb of many a church has been: (Acts 3:6)
Peter told the lame man, silver and gold have we none but in the name of Jesus Christ rise up and walk.
Well the church can no longer say, silver and gold have we none...and no longer can it say in the name of Jesus Christ, rise and walk.
Something has been lost!

1)Awe-Hebrew-Ragaz (Raw-gaz): To quiver (with any violent emotion -...fear) be afraid, stand in awe, quake, shake, tremble. (Abingdon's Strong's Concordance of the Bible.)

Psalm 4:4 KJV
Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

Psalm 33:8 KJV
Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.

Psalm 119:161 KJV
"...my heart standeth in awe of thy word."

2)Reverence: A feeling or attitude of deep respect, love and awe as for something sacred.
(New World Dictionary of American English)

Psalm 89:7 KJV
God is greatly to be feared* in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence* of all them that are about Him.

*Feared-Hebrew-Arats (Aw-rats): To awe, to dread, be affrighted, afraid, dread, feared, terrified, shake terribly. (Abingdon Strong's Concordance of the Bible.)l

*Reverence-Hebrew-Yare (Yaw-ray): To fear; to reveere, to frighten, make afraid, dreadful,(put in fear) be had in reverence. (Abingdon Strong's Concordance of the Bible.)

Hebrews 12:9,28,29 KJV
9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence* and Godly fear*:
29 For our God is a consuming fire.

*Reverence-Greek-Aidos(Ahee-doce): Downcast eyes, modesty, awe, reverence.
(Abingdon Strong's Concordance of the Bible.)

*Fear-Greek-Eulabeia(Yoo-lab-i-ah): Reverence, piety, dread, fear,(feared.)
(Abingdon Strong's Concordance of the Bible.)

3)Tremble: To shake involuntarily from...fear, excitement...
(New World Dictionary of American English.)

I Corinthians 2:1-4 KJV
1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.
3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling*.
4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

Philippians 2:12 KJV
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling*.

*Trembling-Greek-Tromos (Trom-os): Trembling, quaking with fear.

Dear Pastor, in your church sir, be sure you and the deacons, reverence the Altar of your church!
This old pastor has been in many churches over the years, and many are the churches, that let people, after the service, sit on the altar, children play upon it, etc. theses things should not be so.

Articles of communion, not to be worshiped, of course, and yet sacred they should be.

It is time for God's people to once again, show respect and reverence to the House of God, and the things of the Lord.

May it not be said of us as it was said of the people of Nazareth...
Matthew 13l:58 KJV
And He did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

Is the Shroud of Turin authentic?
Answer, absolutely no one knows for sure!
And even if it were to be, should not be worshiped, or treated with adoration!

What if people are healed, who touch it?
Like the woman with the issue of blood if they:

1)Worship and give thanksgiving, falling down before the Lord Jesus.
2)And make confession of what God has done.

Then, wonderful, it has happened unto them according to their faith.
Our Lord, NEVER, chastised the woman for her faith in touching the hem of His garment, and neither should we.

Sacred objects, are not to be worshiped or adored, but held respectfully, with regard for what they stand.

Oh how the enemy of our souls, tries his best to get mankind too one extreme or thee other!
Matthew 7:13,14 KJV
13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
