Lesson: Marks Of Godly Character Versus Marks Of Non-Christian
Character: Conscience Versus Malice
Bible
Texts:
Conscience:
The inner sense of what is right or wrong in one's
conduct or motives, impelling one toward right action:
Malice:
Desire to inflict injury, harm, or suffering on another,
either because of a hostile impulse or out of deep-seated meanness:
Conscience:
Acts
24:15,16 NLT
15
I have the same hope in God that these men have, that He will raise
both the righteous and the unrighteous.
16
Because of this, I always try to maintain a clear conscience before
God and all people.
Malice:
Psalm
140:3 NLT
Their
tongues sting like a snake; the venom of a viper drips from their
lips.
The
Word, Conscience:
John 8:1-11 NLT (A Woman Caught in Adultery)
1
Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives,
2
but early the next morning He was back again at the Temple. A crowd
soon gathered, and He sat down and taught them.
3
As He was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees
brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put
her in front of the crowd.
4
“Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the
act of adultery.
5
The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”
6
They were trying to trap Him into saying something they could use
against Him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with His
finger.
(Perhaps He wrote down all the sins the Pharisees were
guilty of. ed.)
7
They kept demanding an answer, so He stood up again and said, “All
right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!”
8
Then He stooped down again and wrote in the dust.
9
When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning
with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd
with the woman.
10
Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your
accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”
11
“No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin
no more.”
Acts
23:1 KJV
And
Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have
lived in all good conscience before God until this day.
Romans
2:14,15 NLT
14
Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they
know His law when they instinctively obey it, even without having
heard it.
15
They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for
their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them
they are doing right.
I
Corinthians 8:7-9 NLT
7
However, not all believers know this. Some are accustomed to thinking
of idols as being real, so when they eat food that has been offered
to idols, they think of it as the worship of real gods, and their
weak consciences are violated.
8
It’s true that we can’t win God’s approval by what we eat. We
don’t lose anything if we don’t eat it, and we don’t gain
anything if we do.
9
But you must be careful so that your freedom does not cause others
with a weaker conscience to stumble.
II
Corinthians 1:12 NLT
For
our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in
simplicity and Godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the
grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more
abundantly to you-ward.
I
Timothy 1:19 KJV
Holding
faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning
faith have made shipwreck:
I Timothy 3:9 NLT (Deacons)
They
must be committed to the mystery of the faith now revealed and must
live with a clear conscience.
I
Timothy 4:1,2 NLT
1
Now The Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will
turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and
teachings that come from demons.
2
These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are
dead.
Hebrews
10:22 NLT
let
us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully
trusting Him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with
Christ’s Blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed
with pure water.
The
Word, Malice:
Isaiah
58:9-11 KJV
9
Then shalt thou call, and The Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and
He shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the
yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;
10
And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the
afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy
darkness be as the noon day:
11
And The Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in
drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered
garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.
Matthew
5:44 KJV
But
I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good
to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you,
and persecute you;
Ephesians
4:25-27,30-32 NLT
25
So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors The Truth, for we are
all parts of the same body.
26
And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the
sun go down while you are still angry,
27
for anger gives a foothold to the devil.
30
And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live.
Remember, He has identified you as His own, guaranteeing that you
will be saved on the day of redemption.
31
Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as
well as all types of evil behavior.
32
Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another,
just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
Colossians
3:6-10 KJV
6
For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of
disobedience:
7
In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
8
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy,
filthy communication out of your mouth.
9
Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with
his deeds;
10
And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the
image of Him that created him:
Titus
3:2-6 KJV
2
To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all
meekness unto all men.
3
For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived,
serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy,
hateful, and hating one another.
4
But after that the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man
appeared,
5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to
His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing
of The Holy Ghost;
6
Which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior;
I
Peter 2:1` KJV
Wherefore
laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies,
and all evil speakings,
Prayer:
Romans
12:2 NLT
Don’t
copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform
you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will
learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and
perfect.
