Bible Questions Answered:
“Did
Paul deliver people over to Satan?..”
Dorthy/
Hinesville, Georgia U.S.A.
Bible Answer:
Bible Texts:
I
Corinthians 5:1-13 NLT
1 I
can hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality going on
among you—something that even pagans don’t do. I am told that a
man in your church is living in sin with his stepmother.
2
You are so proud of yourselves, but you should be mourning in sorrow
and shame. And you should remove this man from your fellowship.
3
Even though I am not with you in person, I am with you in the Spirit.
And as though I were there, I have already passed judgment on this
man
4 in
the name of The Lord Jesus. You must call a meeting of the church. I
will be present with you in spirit, and so will the power of our Lord
Jesus.
5
Then you must throw this man out and hand him over to Satan so
that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be saved
on the day The Lord returns.
6
Your boasting about this is terrible. Don’t you realize that this
sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of
dough?
7
Get rid of the old “yeast” by removing this wicked person
from among you. Then you will be like a fresh batch of dough made
without yeast, which is what you really are. Christ, our Passover
Lamb, has been sacrificed for us.
8 So
let us celebrate the festival, not with the old bread of wickedness
and evil, but with the new bread of sincerity and truth.
9
When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people
who indulge in sexual sin.
10
But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin,
or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to
leave this world to avoid people like that.
11 I
meant that you are not to associate with anyone who
claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is
greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats
people. Don’t even eat with such people.
12
It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is
your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning.
13
God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, “You
must remove the evil person from among you.”
This Shunning, or excommunication, was only proper, not in the world,
but in the church of The Lord Jesus Christ.
The purpose of this was to keep the house of God, pure from sin and
its influence, and Christian leaders had every right to do this.
I
Corinthians 5:5 NLT
“...hand him over to Satan so that his sinful
nature will be destroyed and he himself will be saved on the day The
Lord returns.
This is excommunication, yes, and so that this individual might fall
under physical judgment.
And why, so that he would come to his senses and realize his sin,
repent, and turn to The Lord.
II
Corinthians 7:8-10 NLT
8 I
am not sorry that I sent that severe letter to you, though I was
sorry at first, for I know it was painful to you for a little while.
9
Now I am glad I sent it, not because it hurt you, but because the
pain caused you to repent and change your ways. It was the kind
of sorrow God wants His people to have, so you were not harmed by us
in any way.
10
For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away
from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind
of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in
spiritual death.
II
Thessalonians 3:5,6,14,15 KJV
5
And The Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the
patient waiting for Christ.
6
Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh
disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.
14
And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and
have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.
15
Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
II
Corinthians 6:14-18 KJV
14
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what
fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what
communion hath light with darkness?
15
And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that
believeth with an infidel?
16
And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the
temple of The Living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and
walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
17
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith The
Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
18
And will be A Father unto you, and ye shall be My sons and daughters,
saith The Lord Almighty.

And Excommunication:
Exodus 12:15 NLT (Passover)
For
seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast. On the first
day of the festival, remove every trace of yeast from your homes.
Anyone who eats bread made with yeast during the seven days of the
festival will be cut off from the community of Israel.
Exodus 30:33 NLT Anointing Oil
Anyone
who makes a blend like it or anoints someone other than a priest will
be cut off from the community.’”
Leviticus 7:20,21 NLT Peace Offerings
20
If you are ceremonially unclean and you eat meat from a peace
offering that was presented to The Lord, you will be cut off from the
community.
21
If you touch anything that is unclean (whether it is human defilement
or an unclean animal or any other unclean, detestable thing) and then
eat meat from a peace offering presented to The Lord, you will be cut
off from the community.”
Leviticus
17:8,9 NLT
8
“Give them this command as well. If any native Israelite or
foreigner living among you offers a burnt offering or a sacrifice
9
but does not bring it to the entrance of the Tabernacle to offer it
to The Lord, that person will be cut off from the community.
Leviticus 23:26-29 NLT (The Day of Atonement)
26
Then The Lord said to Moses,
27
“Be careful to celebrate the Day of Atonement on the tenth day of
that same month—nine days after the Festival of Trumpets. You must
observe it as an official day for holy assembly, a day to deny
yourselves and present special gifts to The Lord.
28
Do no work during that entire day because it is the Day of Atonement,
when offerings of purification are made for you, making you right
with The Lord your God.
29
All who do not deny themselves that day will be cut off from God’s
people.
Numbers
9:13 NLT
“But
those who neglect to celebrate the Passover at the regular time, even
though they are ceremonially clean and not away on a trip, will be
cut off from the community of Israel. If they fail to present The
Lord’s offering at the proper time, they will suffer the
consequences of their guilt.
Matthew 18:15-17 NLT (Jesus-Correcting Another Believer)
15
“If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out
the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have
won that person back.
16
But if you are unsuccessful, take one or two others with you and go
back again, so that everything you say may be confirmed by two or
three witnesses.
17
If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church.
Then if he or she won’t accept the church’s decision, treat that
person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector.
John 9:34 NLT (Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind)
“You
were born a total sinner!” they (Jewish
leaders)
answered. “Are you trying to teach us?” And they threw him
out of the synagogue.
Just
A Closer Walk With Thee
I am weak, but Thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I’ll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.
Refrain:
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
Through this world of toil and snares,
If I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee.
When my feeble life is o’er,
Time for me will be no more;
Guide me gently, safely o’er
To Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.

II
Corinthians 7:1 NLT
Because
we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from
everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward
complete holiness because we fear God.
