Bible Lesson: Conversations With
Jesus: The Sabbath.
Bible Text:
Matthew 12:3-8 KJV
3 But He said
unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungered,
and they that were with him;
4 How he
entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was
not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but
only for the priests?
5 Or have ye
not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the
temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
6 But I say
unto you, That in this place is One greater than the temple.
7 But if ye had
known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye
would not have condemned the guiltless.
8 For The Son
Of Man is Lord even of the sabbath day.
Mark 2:23-28 KJV
23 And it came
to pass, that He went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and
His disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.
24 And the
Pharisees said unto Him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that
which is not lawful?
25 And He said
unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and
was an hungered, he, and they that were with him?
26 How he went
into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and
did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the
priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
27 And He said
unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
28 Therefore
The Son Of Man is Lord also of the sabbath.
Luke 6:1-5 KJV
1 And it came
to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that He went through
the corn fields; and His disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did
eat, rubbing them in their hands.
2 And certain
of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful
to do on the sabbath days?
3 And Jesus
answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David
did, when himself was an hungered, and they which were with him;
4 How he went
into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave
also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but
for the priests alone?
5 And He said
unto them, That The Son Of Man is Lord also of the sabbath.

Sabbath:
Genesis 2:2.3 KJV
2
And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He
rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made.
3 And God
blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it He had
rested from all His work which God created and made.
Exodus
16:23,29,30 KJV
23 He told
them, “This is what The Lord commanded: Tomorrow will be a day of
complete rest, a holy Sabbath day set apart for The Lord. So bake or
boil as much as you want today, and set aside what is left for
tomorrow.”
29 See, for
that The Lord hath given you the sabbath, therefore He giveth you on
the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place,
let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.
30 So the
people rested on the seventh day.
Exodus 20:8-11
KJV
8 Remember the
sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days
shalt thou labor, and do all thy work:
10 But the
seventh day is the sabbath of The Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not
do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor
thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy
gates:
11 For in six
days The Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them
is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore The Lord blessed the
sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Exodus 23:12 NLT
“You have six
days each week for your ordinary work, but on the seventh day you
must stop working. This gives your ox and your donkey a chance to
rest. It also allows your slaves and the foreigners living among you
to be refreshed.
Exodus
31:13,16,17 KJV
13 Speak thou
also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily My sabbaths ye shall
keep: for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your
generations; that ye may know that I am The Lord that doth sanctify
you.
16 Wherefore
the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath
throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.
17 It is a sign
between Me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days The
Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He rested, and was
refreshed.
Exodus 33:14 KJV
And He said, My
presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
Exodus 34:21 KJV

shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in plowing time
and in harvest thou shalt rest.
Exodus 35:2,3
KJV
2 Six days
shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an
holy day, a sabbath of rest to The Lord: whosoever doeth work therein
shall be put to death.
3 Ye shall
kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.
Leviticus 23:3
KJV
Six days shall
work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy
convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of The
Lord in all your dwellings.
Numbers 15:32-36
KJV
32 And while
the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that
gathered sticks upon the sabbath day.
33 And they
that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and
unto all the congregation.
34 And they put
him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him.
35 And The Lord
said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the
congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.
36 And all the
congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with
stones, and he died; as The Lord commanded Moses.
Deuteronomy
5:12-15 KJV
12 Keep the
sabbath day to sanctify it, as The Lord thy God hath commanded thee.
13 Six days
thou shalt labor, and do all thy work:
14 But the
seventh day is the sabbath of The Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not
do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant,
nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy
cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy
manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.
15 And remember
that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that The Lord thy
God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched
out arm: therefore The Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the
sabbath day.
Deuteronomy 5:15
KJV
And remember
that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that The Lord thy
God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched
out arm: therefore The Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the
sabbath day.
Nehemiah 9:14
KJV
And madest
known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts,
statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:
Nehemiah 13:15-22 NLT (O.T. Blue Laws)
15 In those
days I saw men of Judah treading out their wine presses on the
Sabbath. They were also bringing in grain, loading it on donkeys, and
bringing their wine, grapes, figs, and all sorts of produce to
Jerusalem to sell on the Sabbath. So I rebuked them for selling their
produce on that day.
16 Some men
from Tyre, who lived in Jerusalem, were bringing in fish and all
kinds of merchandise. They were selling it on the Sabbath to the
people of Judah—and in Jerusalem at that!
17 So I
confronted the nobles of Judah. “Why are you profaning the Sabbath
in this evil way?” I asked.
18 “Wasn’t
it just this sort of thing that your ancestors did that caused our
God to bring all this trouble upon us and our city? Now you are
bringing even more wrath upon Israel by permitting the Sabbath to be
desecrated in this way!”
19 Then I
commanded that the gates of Jerusalem should be shut as darkness fell
every Friday evening, not to be opened until the Sabbath ended. I
sent some of my own servants to guard the gates so that no
merchandise could be brought in on the Sabbath day.
20 The
merchants and tradesmen with a variety of wares camped outside
Jerusalem once or twice.
21 But I spoke
sharply to them and said, “What are you doing out here, camping
around the wall? If you do this again, I will arrest you!” And that
was the last time they came on the Sabbath.
22 Then I
commanded the Levites to purify themselves and to guard the gates in
order to preserve the holiness of the Sabbath.
Isaiah 56:1,2
KJV
1 Thus saith
The Lord, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for My salvation is near
to come, and My righteousness to be revealed.
2 Blessed is
the man that doeth this, and The son Of Man that layeth hold on it;
that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from
doing any evil.
Isaiah 58:13,14
KJV
13 If thou turn
away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on My holy
day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of The Lord, honorable;
and shalt honor Him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own
pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
14 Then shalt
thou delight thyself in The Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon
the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of
Jacob thy father: for the mouth of The Lord hath spoken it.
Jeremiah
17:21,22 NLT
21 This is what
The Lord says: Listen to My warning! Stop carrying on your trade at
Jerusalem’s gates on the Sabbath day.
22 Do not do
your work on the Sabbath, but make it a holy day. I gave this command
to your ancestors,
23 but they did
not listen or obey. They stubbornly refused to pay attention or
accept My discipline.
Ezekiel 20:12-14
KJV
12 Moreover
also I gave them My sabbaths, to be a sign between Me and them, that
they might know that I am The Lord that sanctify them.
13 But the
house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness: they walked
not in My statutes, and they despised My judgments, which if a man
do, he shall even live in them; and My sabbaths they greatly
polluted: then I said, I would pour out My fury upon them in the
wilderness, to consume them.
14 But I
wrought for My name's sake, that it should not be polluted before the
heathen, in whose sight I brought them out.
Matthew 5:17-19
KJV
17 Think not
that I am come to destroy The Law, or the prophets: I am not come to
destroy, but to fulfill.
18 For verily I
say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall
in no wise pass from The Law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever
therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall
teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven:
but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great
in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 12:8 KJV
For The Son Of
Man is Lord even of the sabbath day.
Mark 3:1-6 KJV
1 And He
entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had
a withered hand.
2 And they
watched Him, whether He would heal Him on the sabbath day; that they
might accuse Him.
3 And He saith
unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth.
4 And He saith
unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do
evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.
5 And when He
had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the
hardness of their hearts, He saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine
hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the
other.
6 And the
Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians
against Him, how they might destroy Him.
Luke 4:16 KJV
And He came to
Nazareth, where He had been brought up: and, as His custom was, He
went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
Luke 13:10-17
KJV
10 And He was
teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
11 And, behold,
there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and
was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.
12 And when
Jesus saw her, He called her to Him, and said unto her, Woman, thou
art loosed from thine infirmity.
13 And He laid
His hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and
glorified God.
14 And the
ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus
had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are
six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be
healed, and not on the sabbath day.
15 The Lord
then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you
on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him
away to watering?
16 And ought
not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound,
lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath
day?
17 And when He
had said these things, all His adversaries were ashamed: and all the
people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him.
Luke 23:56 KJV
And they
returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath
day according to the commandment.
John 14:15,21
KJV
15 If ye love
Me, keep My commandments.
21 He that hath
My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he
that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and
will manifest Myself to him.

Colossians
2:16,17 NLT
16 So don’t
let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not
celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths.
17 For these
rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ Himself
is that reality.
Hebrews 4:9 KJV
There remaineth
therefore a rest to the people of God.
Revelation 14:12
NLT
"...God’s
holy people must endure persecution patiently, obeying His commands
and maintaining their faith in Jesus.
Another
Six Days' Work Is Done
Another six days' work is done,
Another Sabbath is begun;
Return, my soul, enjoy thy rest,
Improve the day that God has blessed.
Come, bless The Lord, whose love assigns
So sweet a rest to weary minds;
A blessed antepast is giv'n,
On this day more than all the sev'n.
O that our thoughts and thanks may rise
As grateful incense to the skies,
And draw from Christ that sweet repose
Which none but he who feels it knows.
This heav'nly calm within the breast
Is the best pledge of glorious rest,
Which for the church of God remains,
The end of cares, the end of pains.
