Bible Lesson: Conversations With
Jesus: Sins Against The Holy Spirit.
Bible Text:
Matthew 12:22-37 NLT (Jesus
and the Prince of Demons)
22 Then a
demon-possessed man, who was blind and couldn’t speak, was brought
to Jesus. He healed the man so that he could both speak and see.
23 The crowd
was amazed and asked, “Could it be that Jesus is The Son Of David,
The Messiah?”
24 But when the
Pharisees heard about the miracle, they said, “No wonder He can
cast out demons. He gets His power from Satan, the prince of demons.”
25 Jesus knew
their thoughts and replied, “Any kingdom divided by civil war is
doomed. A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart.
26 And if Satan
is casting out Satan, he is divided and fighting against himself. His
own kingdom will not survive.
27 And if I am
empowered by Satan, what about your own exorcists? They cast out
demons, too, so they will condemn you for what you have said.
28 But if I am
casting out demons by The Spirit Of God, then the Kingdom of God has
arrived among you.
29 For who is
powerful enough to enter the house of a strong man and plunder his
goods? Only someone even stronger—someone who could tie him up and
then plunder his house.
30 “Anyone
who isn’t with Me opposes Me, and anyone who isn’t working with
Me is actually working against Me.
31 “So I tell
you, every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven—except blasphemy
against The Holy Spirit, which will never be forgiven.
32 Anyone who
speaks against The Son Of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who speaks
against The Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, either in this world
or in the world to come.
33 “A tree is
identified by its fruit. If a tree is good, its fruit will be good.
If a tree is bad, its fruit will be bad.
34 You brood of
snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For
whatever is in your heart determines what you say.
35 A good
person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an
evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart.
36 And I tell
you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle
word you speak.
37 The words
you say will either acquit you or condemn you.”
Mark 3:20-30 NLT (Jesus
and the Prince of Demons)
20 One time
Jesus entered a house, and the crowds began to gather again. Soon He
and His disciples couldn’t even find time to eat.
21 When His
family heard what was happening, they tried to take Him away. “He’s
out of His mind,” they said.
22 But the
teachers of religious law who had arrived from Jerusalem said, “He’s
possessed by Satan, the prince of demons. That’s where He gets the
power to cast out demons.”
23 Jesus called
them over and responded with an illustration. “How can Satan cast
out Satan?” He asked.
24 “A kingdom
divided by civil war will collapse.
25 Similarly, a
family splintered by feuding will fall apart.
26 And if Satan
is divided and fights against himself, how can he stand? He would
never survive.
27 Let Me
illustrate this further. Who is powerful enough to enter the house of
a strong man and plunder his goods? Only someone even
stronger—someone who could tie him up and then plunder his house.
28 “I tell
you The Truth, all sin and blasphemy can be forgiven,
29 but anyone
who blasphemes The Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. This is a sin
with eternal consequences.”
30 He told them
this because they were saying, “He’s possessed by an evil
spirit.”
Why is it so important, not to sin against, God The Holy Spirit?
Because He is The Life-Giving Spirit.
Romans
8:1,2,15,16 NLT
1 So now there
is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.
2 And because
you belong to Him, the power of The Life-Giving Spirit
has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.
15 So you have
not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you
received God’s Spirit when He adopted you as His own children. Now
we call Him, “Abba, Father.”
16 For His
Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.
Illustration:
This story has been told before on TBPL.
That our Savior, The Blessed Redeemer, has been likened
to a ship of Life, out on a dark sea of death, and destruction, a sea
of lost souls, Lost and dying.
Amidst the howls of wind and waves the Life saving ship
of salvation arrives, the one and only way for those lost at sea to
be saved.
A lifesaver is thrown to the drowning man, this is the
act of God The Holy Spirit, calling him to come to The Lord, to come
to the only place of Life and safety, on board the ship of faith, and
salvation.
What thinking man, would refuse the lifesaver, but that
is just what a sinner does! He insults God's Holy Spirit, by refusing
His calling, and His pleading with him.
Genesis
6:3 DBT
And
Jehovah said, My Spirit shall not always plead with Man..."
To refuse the lifesaver, to refuse the life-line, is to
perish.
Matthew 7:13,14
KJV
13 Enter ye in
at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that
leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because
strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto Life,
and few there be that find it.
Bible Topic:
Sin
Against The Holy Spirit:
Genesis 6:3 KJV
And The Lord
said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man..."
Genesis 6:3 NOG
Then Yahweh
said, “My Spirit will not struggle with humans forever..."
I Samuel 16:14
KJV
But The Spirit
Of The Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from The Lord
troubled him.
Psalm 51:11 KJV (King David)
Cast me not
away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me.
Isaiah 63:10 KJV
But they
rebelled, and vexed His Holy Spirit: therefore He was turned to be
their enemy, and He fought against them.
Luke 12:10 KJV
And whosoever
shall speak a word against The Son Of Man, it shall be forgiven him:
but unto him that blasphemeth against The Holy Ghost it shall not be
forgiven.
Acts 5:1-11 NLT
1 But there
was a certain man named Ananias who, with his wife, Sapphira, sold
some property.
2 He brought
part of the money to the apostles, claiming it was the full amount.
With his wife’s consent, he kept the rest.
3 Then Peter
said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to
The Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself.
4 The property
was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it,
the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like
this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!”
5 As soon as
Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died. Everyone
who heard about it was terrified.
6 Then some
young men got up, wrapped him in a sheet, and took him out and buried
him.
7 About three
hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
8 Peter asked
her, “Was this the price you and your husband received for your
land?” “Yes,” she replied, “that was the price.”
9 And Peter
said, “How could the two of you even think of conspiring to test
The Spirit of The Lord like this? The young men who buried your
husband are just outside the door, and they will carry you out, too.”
10 Instantly,
she fell to the floor and died. When the young men came in and saw
that she was dead, they carried her out and buried her beside her
husband.
11 Great fear
gripped the entire church and everyone else who heard what had
happened.
Ephesians 4:30
KJV
And grieve not
The Holy Spirit Of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of
redemption.
I Thessalonians
5:19 KJV
Quench not The
Spirit.
Hebrews 6:4-6
NLT
4 For it is
impossible to bring back to repentance those who were once
enlightened—those who have experienced the good things of heaven
and shared in The Holy Spirit,
5 who have
tasted the goodness of The Word Of God and The Power of the age to
come—
6 and who then
turn away from God. It is impossible to bring such people back to
repentance; by rejecting The Son Of God, they themselves are nailing
Him to the cross once again and holding Him up to public shame.
Hebrews 10:26-29
KJV
26 For if we
sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of The Truth,
there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
27 But a
certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which
shall devour the adversaries.
28 He that
despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
29 Of how much
sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath
trodden under foot The Son Of God, and hath counted The Blood Of The
Covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done
despite unto The Spirit Of Grace?
I John 5:16 KJV
If any man see
his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he
shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin
unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
Jude 1:17-19 NLT
17 But you, my
dear friends, must remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus
Christ predicted.
18 They told
you that in the last times there would be scoffers whose purpose in
life is to satisfy their ungodly desires.
19 These people
are the ones who are creating divisions among you. They follow their
natural instincts because they do not have God’s Spirit in them.
Sins against God The Holy Spirit, refusing the call of salvation,
calling the works of God, the works of the devil, rejecting God's
Word, and His Work. How careful we must be, not to slight The Spirit
Of God.
Blessed
Quietness
Joys are flowing like a river,
Since The Comforter has come;
He abides with us forever,
Makes the trusting heart His home.
Chorus:
Blessed quietness, holy quietness,
Blest assurance in my soul!
On the stormy sea, He speaks peace to me,
And the billows cease to roll.
Everything is turned to gladness,
All around this glorious Guest;
Banished unbelief and sadness,
All is perfect peace and rest.
Like the rain that falls from heaven,
Like the sunlight from the sky,
So The Holy Spirit given,
Falls upon us from on high.
What a wonderful salvation,
Where we always see His face!
What a peaceful habitation!
What a quiet resting place!

Isaiah 43:10,11
KJV

neither shall there be after Me.
11 I, even I, am The Lord; and
beside Me there is no Savior.
