Bible Lesson: Conversations With
Jesus: Hypocrisy Denounced.
Bible Text:
Matthew
23:1-39 KJV
1
Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to His disciples,
2
Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
3
All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do;
but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
4
For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on
men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of
their fingers.
5
But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad
their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6
And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the
synagogues,
7
And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8
But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and
all ye are brethren.
9
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father,
which is in heaven.
10
Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11
But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12
And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall
humble himself shall be exalted.
13
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up
the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves,
neither suffer (permit)
ye them that are entering to go in.
14
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour
widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayer: therefore ye
shall receive the greater damnation.
15
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea
and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him
twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
16
Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by
the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of
the temple, he is a debtor!
17
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple
that sanctifieth the gold?
18
And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever
sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
19
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar
that sanctifieth the gift?
20
Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all
things thereon.
21
And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that
dwelleth therein.
22
And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by The Throne Of God, and
by Him that sitteth thereon.
23
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of
mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of
the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done,
and not to leave the other undone.
24
Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean
the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full
of extortion and excess.
26
Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and
platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto
whited sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are
within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
28
Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye
are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the
tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchers of the righteous,
30
And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have
been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31
Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children
of them which killed the prophets.
32
Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
33
Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation
of hell?
34
Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and
scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them
shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to
city:
35
That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth,
from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of
Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
36
Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this
generation.
37 O
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest
them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy
children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her
wings, and ye would not!
38
Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
39
For I say unto you, Ye shall not see Me henceforth, till ye shall
say, Blessed is He that cometh in the name of The Lord.
Mark
12:38-40 KJV
38
And He said unto them in His doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which
love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the
marketplaces,
39
And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at
feasts:
40
Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers:
these shall receive greater damnation.
Luke
20:45-47 KJV
45
Then in the audience of all the people He said unto His disciples,
46
Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love
greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues,
and the chief rooms at feasts;
47
Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the
same shall receive greater damnation.
Hypocrisy
And The Word:
Job
13:16 KJV
"...an
hypocrite shall not come before Him.
Job
15:34 KJV
For
the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate..."
Psalm
12:2 NLT
Neighbors
lie to each other, speaking with flattering lips and deceitful
hearts.
Psalm
55:20,21 NLT
20
As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises.
21
His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words
are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers!
Proverbs
11:9 KJV
An
hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbor..."
Isaiah
32:6 KJV
For
the vile person will speak villainy, and his heart will work
iniquity, to practice hypocrisy..."
Matthew
6:1-6 NLT
1
“Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by
others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.
2
When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites
do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention
to their acts of charity! I tell you The Truth, they have received
all the reward they will ever get.
3
But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know
what your right hand is doing.
4
Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything,
will reward you.
5
“When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray
publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can
see them. I tell you The Truth, that is all the reward they will ever
get. 6 But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind
you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees
everything, will reward you.
Matthew
7:1-5;21-23 NLT
1
“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged.
2
For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in
judging is the standard by which you will be judged.
3
“And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a
log in your own?
4
How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get
rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log
in your own eye?
5
Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will
see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
21
“Not everyone who calls out to Me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the
Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of My Father
in heaven will enter.
22
On judgment day many will say to Me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in
your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many
miracles in your name.’
23
But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from Me, you who
break God’s laws.’
Matthew
13:20,21 KJV
20
But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that
heareth the Word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
21
Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when
tribulation or persecution ariseth because of The Word, by and by he
is offended.
Mark
7:6 KJV
He
answered and said unto them, Well hath Isaiah prophesied of you
hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoreth Me with their
lips, but their heart is far from Me.
Luke
12:1 KJV
1 In
the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable
multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, He
began to say unto His disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven
of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Luke
16:13 KJV
“No
one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other;
you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve
God and be enslaved to money.”
Luke
18:9-14 KJV
9
And He spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves
that they were righteous, and despised others:
10
Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the
other a publican.
11
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee,
that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or
even as this publican.
12 I
fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
13
And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his
eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful
to me a sinner.
14 I
tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the
other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he
that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
John
7:24 KJV
Judge
not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
Romans
1:18-22 NLT
18
But God shows His anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people
who suppress The Truth by their wickedness.
19
They know The Truth about God because He has made it obvious to them.
20
For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and
sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see His invisible
qualities—His eternal power and divine nature. So they have no
excuse for not knowing God.
21
Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship Him as God or even
give Him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God
was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused.
22
Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools.
Romans
2:3,14,15,21,22 NLT
3
Since you judge others for doing these things, why do you think you
can avoid God’s judgment when you do the same things?
14
Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they
know His law when they instinctively obey it, even without having
heard it.
15
They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for
their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them
they are doing right.
21
Well then, if you teach others, why don’t you teach yourself? You
tell others not to steal, but do you steal?
22
You say it is wrong to commit adultery, but do you commit adultery?
You condemn idolatry, but do you use items stolen from pagan temples?
Romans
10:1-4 NLT
1
Dear brothers and sisters, the longing of my heart and my prayer to
God is for the people of Israel to be saved.
2 I
know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. 3
For they don’t understand God’s way of making people right with
Himself. Refusing to accept God’s way, they cling to their own way
of getting right with God by trying to keep the law.
4
For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was
given. As a result, all who believe in Him are made right with God.
Romans
14:1-3 NLT
1
Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with
them about what they think is right or wrong.
2
For instance, one person believes it’s all right to eat anything.
But another believer with a sensitive conscience will eat only
vegetables.
3
Those who feel free to eat anything must not look down on those who
don’t. And those who don’t eat certain foods must not condemn
those who do, for God has accepted them.
Philippians
3:8-10 NLT
8
Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite
value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have discarded
everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain
Christ
9
and become one with Him. I no longer count on my own righteousness
through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in
Christ. For God’s way of making us right with Himself depends on
faith.
James
1:21-27 NLT
21
So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept
The Word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save
your souls.
22
But don’t just listen to God’s Word. You must do what it says.
Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.
23
For if you listen to The Word and don’t obey, it is like glancing
at your face in a mirror.
24
You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.
25
But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free,
and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then
God will bless you for doing it.
26
If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are
fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.
27
Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God The Father means caring
for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the
world corrupt you.
I
John 2:4 KJV
He
that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar,
and The Truth is not in him.
Hypocrisy, comes in so many forms, it is a pretense of what is true,
and righteous.
Matthew
7:15-20 KJV
15
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but
inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns,
or figs of thistles?
17
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree
bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A
good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree
bring forth good fruit.
19
Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast
into the fire.
20
Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Romans
12:9,10 KJV
9
Let love be without dissimulation*. Abhor that
which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
10
Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor
preferring one another;
*Dissimulation
- Greek: Anupokritos (An-oo-pok-ree-tos): Sincere: -
without hypocrisy, unfeigned.
Breath
On Me Breath Of God
Breathe on me, Breath Of God,
Fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.
Breathe on me, Breath Of God,
Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will,
To do and to endure.
Breathe on me, Breath Of God,
Till I am wholly Thine,
Until this earthly part of me
Glows with Thy fire divine.
Breathe on me, Breath Of God,
So shall I never die,
But live with Thee the perfect life
Of Thine eternity.

Prayer:
II
Corinthians 7:1 NLT
Because
we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from
everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward
complete holiness because we fear God.
Hebrews
12:14 KJV
Follow
peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see The
Lord:
