Bible Lesson: Conversations With Jesus: The Wicked Farmers.

Bible Text:

Matthew 21:33-46 NLT (The Wicked Farmers)
33 “Now listen to another story. A certain landowner planted a vineyard, built a wall around it, dug a pit for pressing out the grape juice, and built a lookout tower. Then he leased the vineyard to tenant farmers and moved to another country.
34 At the time of the grape harvest, he sent his servants to collect his share of the crop.
35 But the farmers grabbed his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another.
36 So the landowner sent a larger group of his servants to collect for him, but the results were the same.
37 “Finally, the owner sent his son, thinking, ‘Surely they will respect my son.’
38 “But when the tenant farmers saw his son coming, they said to one another, ‘Here comes the heir to this estate. Come on, let’s kill him and get the estate for ourselves!’
39 So they grabbed him, dragged him out of the vineyard, and murdered him.
40 “When the owner of the vineyard returns,” Jesus asked, “what do you think he will do to those farmers?”
41 The religious leaders replied, “He will put the wicked men to a horrible death and lease the vineyard to others who will give him his share of the crop after each harvest.”
42 Then Jesus asked them, “Didn’t you ever read this in the Scriptures? ‘The Stone that the builders rejected has now become The Cornerstone. This is The Lord’s doing, and it is wonderful to see.’
43 I tell you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation that will produce the proper fruit.
44 Anyone who stumbles over that Stone will be broken to pieces, and it will crush anyone it falls on.”
45 When the leading priests and Pharisees heard this parable, they realized He was telling the story against them—they were the wicked farmers.
46 They wanted to arrest Him, but they were afraid of the crowds, who considered Jesus to be A Prophet.

Mark 12:1-12 KJV
1 And He began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the wine fat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.
2 And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.
3 And they caught him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.
4 And again he sent unto them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled.
5 And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some.
6 Having yet therefore one son, his well beloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.
7 But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours.'
8 And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.
9 What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others.
10 And have ye not read this scripture; The Stone which the builders rejected is become The Head Of The Corner:
11 This was The Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?
12 And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that He had spoken the parable against them: and they left Him, and went their way.

Luke 20:9-19 KJV
9 Then began He to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.
10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.
11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.
12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.
13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.
14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.
15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?
16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.
17 And He beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The Stone which the builders rejected, the same is become The Head Of The Corner?
18 Whosoever shall fall upon that Stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on Him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that He had spoken this parable against them.

God's Vineyard, The Old Testament:

Psalm 80:9-19 KJV
8 Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it.
9 Thou preparedst room before it, and didst cause it to take deep root, and it filled the land.
10 The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars.
11 She sent out her boughs unto the sea, and her branches unto the river.
12 Why hast thou then broken down her hedges, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her?
13 The boar out of the wood doth waste it, and the wild beast of the field doth devour it.
14 Return, we beseech thee, O God Of Hosts: look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine;
15 And the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted, and The Branch that thou madest strong for thyself.
16 It is burned with fire, it is cut down: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.
17 Let thy hand be upon The Man Of Thy Right Hand, upon The son Of Man whom thou madest strong for thyself.
18 So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.
19 Turn us again, O Lord God Of Hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.

Isaiah 5:1-7 NLT (A Song about The Lord’s Vineyard.)
1 Now I will sing for the one I love a song about His vineyard: My Beloved had a vineyard on a rich and fertile hill.
2 He plowed the land, cleared its stones, and planted it with the best vines. In the middle He built a watchtower and carved a wine press in the nearby rocks. Then He waited for a harvest of sweet grapes, but the grapes that grew were bitter.
3 Now, you people of Jerusalem and Judah, you judge between Me and My vineyard.
4 What more could I have done for My vineyard that I have not already done? When I expected sweet grapes, why did My vineyard give Me bitter grapes?
5 Now let Me tell you what I will do to My vineyard: I will tear down its hedges and let it be destroyed. I will break down its walls and let the animals trample it.
6 I will make it a wild place where the vines are not pruned and the ground is not hoed, a place overgrown with briers and thorns. I will command the clouds to drop no rain on it.
7 The nation of Israel is the vineyard of The Lord Of Heaven’s Armies The people of Judah are His pleasant garden. He expected a crop of justice, but instead He found oppression. He expected to find righteousness, but instead He heard cries of violence.

These Old Testament verses tell us that The Lord used the vineyard as a symbol of Israel, His people.

Isaiah 5:7 KJV
The nation of Israel is the vineyard of The Lord Of Heaven’s Armies The people of Judah are His pleasant garden,
He expected a crop of justice, but instead He found oppression. He expected to find righteousness, but instead He heard cries of violence.

Matthew 21:45 NLT
45 When the leading priests and Pharisees heard this parable, they realized He was telling the story against them—they were the wicked farmers.

Jesus asked His listeners to determine the fate of the wicked farmers.

Matthew 21:41 NLT
The religious leaders replied, “He will put the wicked men to a horrible death and lease the vineyard to others who will give him his share of the crop after each harvest.”

The Lord, is The Husbandman (Land Owner), He has placed a hedge of protection around about His people.

Job 1:10 KJV (The devil-states the facts.)
Hast not thou made an hedge about him (Job), and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

King David and his descendants had truly watched over them as a nation. God had watched over them and provided for them. He had expected a crop of righteousness with thanksgiving, but that crop did not appear.

He sent them Prophets with signs and wonders, yet they mistreated and killed them. Lastly He sent to them His Only Begotten Son. Though He came with a message of forgiveness, and love, with signs and miracles following, yet they hated Him, and killed Him.

The vineyard was given to others, the Gentiles, who in a measure accepted Him, receiving God's blessings.

Matthew 21:42-46 NLT
42 Then Jesus asked them, “Didn’t you ever read this in The Scriptures?
The Stone that the builders rejected has now become The Cornerstone. This is The Lord’s doing, and it is wonderful to see.’

Psalm 118:22,23 KJV

22 The Stone which the builders refused is become The Head Stone Of The Corner.
23 This is The Lord's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

The Jewish Council realized that Jesus was speaking about them, so did they repent? No, they hardened their hearts and wanted to arrest Him, but were afraid of the crowds.

Matthew 21:44 NLT
Anyone who stumbles over that Stone will be broken to pieces, and it will crush anyone it falls on.”

Isaiah 8:13-15 NLT
13 Make The Lord Of Heaven’s Armies holy in your life. He is the one you should fear. He is the one who should make you tremble.
14 He will keep you safe. But to Israel and Judah He will be A Stone that makes people stumble,
A Rock that makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem He will be a trap and a snare.
15 Many will stumble and fall, never to rise again. They will be snared and captured.”

Believers Today:

Ephesians 2:19-22 KJV
19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being
The Chief Corner Stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in The Lord:
22 In whom ye also are built together for an habitation of God through The Spirit.

John 15:1-9 KJV
1 I am The True Vine, and My Father is The Husbandman.
2 Every branch in Me that beareth not fruit He taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, He purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
3 Now ye are clean through The Word which I have spoken unto you.
4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in The Vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in Me.
5 I am The Vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without Me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in Me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If ye abide in Me, and My Words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
8 Herein is My Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be My disciples.
9 As The Father hath loved Me, so have I loved you: continue ye in My love.

Matthew 12:30 KJV
He that is not with Me is against Me; and he that gathereth not with Me scattereth abroad.

Joshua 24:13-15 KJV
13 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labor, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and olive yards which ye planted not do ye eat.
14 Now therefore fear The Lord, and serve Him in sincerity and in Truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye The Lord.
15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve The Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve The Lord.

The Church's One Foundation

The church's one Foundation
is Jesus Christ her Lord;
she is His new creation,
by water and The Word;
from heav'n He came and sought her
to be His holy bride;
with His own Blood He bought her,
and for her life He died.

Elect from ev'ry nation,
yet one o'er all the earth,
her charter of salvation,
one Lord, one faith, one birth;
one holy Name she blesses,
partakes one holy food,
and to one hope she presses,
with ev'ry grace endued.

'Mid toil and tribulation,
and tumult of her war,
she waits the consummation
of peace for evermore;
till with the vision glorious
her longing eyes are blest,
and the great church victorious
shall be the church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union
with God the Three in One,
and mystic sweet communion
with those whose rest is won.
O happy ones and holy!
Lord, give us grace that we,
like them, the meek and lowly,
on high may dwell with Thee.

Prayer:

Matthew 24:45-47 KJV
45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
