Bible Lesson: Conversations With
Jesus: Covetousness.
Bible Text:
Luke 12:13-21 KJV
Bible Topic: Covetousness
Luke 12:13-21 KJV
13 And one of
the company said unto Him, Master, speak to my brother, that he
divide the inheritance with me.
14 And He said
unto him, Man, who made Me a judge or a divider over you?
15 And He said
unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life
consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
16 And he spake
a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought
forth plentifully:
17 And he
thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no
room where to bestow my fruits?
18 And he said,
This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and
there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 And I will
say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years;
take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
20 But God said
unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee:
then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
21 So is he
that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
Covetousness:
Exodus 20:17 NLT
“You must not
covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s
wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that
belongs to your neighbor.”
Ecclesiastes
5:10 KJV
He that loveth
silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth
abundance with increase: this is also vanity.
Proverbs 15:27
KJV
He that is
greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts
shall live.
Matthew
6:19-21,24,26 NLT
19 “Don’t
store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust
destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal.
20 Store your
treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves
do not break in and steal.
21 Wherever
your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
24 “No one
can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you
will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God
and be enslaved to money.
26 And what do
you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is
anything worth more than your soul?
Matthew 13:22
KJV
He also that
received seed among the thorns is he that heareth The Word; and the
care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke The Word,
and he becometh unfruitful.
Matthew 16:26,27
KJV
26 For what is
a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own
soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
27 For The Son
Of Man shall come in the glory of His Father with His angels; and
then He shall reward every man according to His works.
Matthew 26:15
KJV
And said unto
them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver Him unto you? And they
covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.
Mark 4:19 KJV
And the cares
of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of
other things entering in, choke The Word, and it becometh unfruitful.
Mark 7:20-23 KJV
20 And He said,
That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
21 For from
within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries,
fornications, murders,
22 Thefts,
covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye,
blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23 All these
evil things come from within, and defile the man.
Luke 12:33,34
KJV
33 Sell that ye
have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a
treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth,
neither moth corrupteth.
34 For where
your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Luke 16:13 NLT
“No one can
serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will
be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be
enslaved to money.”
Luke
18:9-14,24,25 KJV
9 And He spake
this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were
righteous, and despised others:
10 Two men went
up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a
publican.
11 The Pharisee
stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not
as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this
publican.
12 I fast twice
in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
13 And the
publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes
unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me
a sinner.
14 I tell you,
this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for
every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth
himself shall be exalted.
24 And when
Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, He said, How hardly shall they
that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
25 For it is
easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man
to enter into the kingdom of God.
Luke 22:3-5 KJV
3 Then entered
Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the
twelve.
4 And he went
his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he
might betray Him unto them.
5 And they were
glad, and covenanted to give him money.
John 12:4-6 NLT
4 But Judas
Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray Him, said,
5 “That
perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the
money given to the poor.”
6 Not that he
cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of
the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself.
Romans 13:8-10
KJV
8 Owe no man
any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath
fulfilled the law.
9 For this,
Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not
steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and
if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this
saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
10 Love worketh
no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
I Corinthians
5:11 KJV
But now I have
written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a
brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolator, or a railer, or
a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
I Corinthians
6:9-11 KJV
9 Don’t you
realize that those who do wrong will not inherit The Kingdom Of God?
Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who
worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or
practice homosexuality,
10 or are
thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat
people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God.
11 Some of you
were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you
were made right with God by calling on the name of The Lord Jesus
Christ and by The Spirit Of Our God.
Galatians
5:19-21 NLT
19 When you
follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear:
sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures,
20 idolatry,
sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish
ambition, dissension, division,
21 envy,
drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you
again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will
not inherit the Kingdom of God.
Ephesians 5:3,5
NLT
3 Let there be
no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no
place among God’s people.
5 You can be
sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit The
Kingdom Of Christ And Of God. For a greedy person is an idolater,
worshiping the things of this world.
Colossians 3:5,6
NLT
5 So put to
death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to
do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t
be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things
of this world.
6 Because of
these sins, the anger of God is coming.
I Timothy
6:5-11,17 NLT
5 These people
always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned
their backs on The Truth. To them, a show of Godliness is just a way
to become wealthy.
6 Yet true
Godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.
7 After all, we
brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t
take anything with us when we leave it.
8 So if we have
enough food and clothing, let us be content.
9 But people
who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many
foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and
destruction.
10 For the love
of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving
money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with
many sorrows.
11 But you,
Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things. Pursue
righteousness and a Godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance,
and gentleness.
17 Teach those
who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their
money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who
richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.
II Timothy 3:1-5
KJV
1 This know
also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall
be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud,
blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without
natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent,
fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors,
heady, high minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form
of Godliness, but denying The Power thereof: from such turn away.
Titus 1:11 NLT
They must be
silenced, because they are turning whole families away from The Truth
by their false teaching. And they do it only for money.
Hebrews 13:5 NLT
Don’t love
money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said,
“I will never
fail you. I will never abandon you.”
James 4:2 KJV
Ye lust, and
have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight
and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
II Peter 2:3 KJV
And through
covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you:
whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation
slumbereth not.
I John 2:15-17
KJV
15 Love not the
world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the
world, the love of The Father is not in him.
16 For all that
is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and
the pride of life, is not of The Father, but is of the world.
17 And the
world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will
of God abideth for ever.
Give
Me Jesus
Take the world, but give me Jesus,
All its joys are but a name;
But His love abideth ever,
Through eternal years the same.
Chorus:
Oh, the height and depth of mercy!
Oh, the length and breadth of love!
Oh, the fullness of redemption,
Pledge of endless life above!
Take the world, but give me Jesus,
Sweetest comfort of my soul;
With my Savior watching o’er me,
I can sing though billows roll.
Take the world, but give me Jesus,
Let me view His constant smile;
Then throughout my pilgrim journey
Light will cheer me all the while.
Take the world, but give me Jesus;
In His cross my trust shall be,
Till, with clearer, brighter vision,
Face to face my Lord I see.

Prayer:
Acts
20:35 KJV
I
have shewed you all things, how that so laboring ye ought to support
the weak, and to remember the words of The Lord Jesus, how He said,
It is more blessed to give than to receive.
