42 And The Lord
replied, “A faithful, sensible servant is one to whom the master
can give the responsibility of managing his other household servants
and feeding them.
43 If the
master returns and finds that the servant has done a good job, there
will be a reward.
44 I tell you
The Truth, the master will put that servant in charge of all he owns.
45 But what if
the servant thinks, ‘My master won’t be back for a while,’ and
he begins beating the other servants, partying, and getting drunk?
46 The master
will return unannounced and unexpected, and he will cut the servant
in pieces and banish him with the unfaithful.
The Lord's Request:
42 And The Lord

Jesus told this story to His disciples: “There was a certain rich
man who had a manager handling his affairs. One day a report came
that the manager was wasting his employer’s money.

So the employer called him in and said, ‘What’s this I hear about
you? Get your report in order, because you are going to be fired.’

“The manager thought to himself, ‘Now what? My boss has fired me.
I don’t have the strength to dig ditches, and I’m too proud to
beg.

Ah, I know how to ensure that I’ll have plenty of friends who will
give me a home when I am fired.’

“So he invited each person who owed money to his employer to come
and discuss the situation. He asked the first one, ‘How much do you
owe him?’

The man replied, ‘I owe him 800 gallons of olive oil.’ So the
manager told him, ‘Take the bill and quickly change it to 400
gallons.’

“‘And how much do you owe my employer?’ he asked the next man.
‘I owe him 1,000 bushels of wheat,’ was the reply. ‘Here,’
the manager said, ‘take the bill and change it to 800 bushels.’

“The rich man had to admire the dishonest rascal for being so
shrewd. And it is true that the children of this world are more
shrewd in dealing with the world around them than are the children of
the Light.

Here’s the lesson: Use your worldly resources to benefit others and
make friends. Then, when your possessions are gone, they will welcome
you to an eternal home.

“If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in
large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be
honest with greater responsibilities.
11
And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you
with the true riches of heaven?
12
And if you are not faithful with other people’s things, why should
you be trusted with things of your own?

The crowd was listening to everything Jesus said. And because He was
nearing Jerusalem, He told them a story to correct the impression
that the Kingdom of God would begin right away.

He said, “A nobleman was called away to a distant empire to be
crowned king and then return.

Before he left, he called together ten of his servants and divided
among them ten pounds of silver, saying, ‘Invest this for me while
I am gone.’

But his people hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We
do not want him to be our king.’

“After he was crowned king, he returned and called in the servants
to whom he had given the money. He wanted to find out what their
profits were. 16 The first servant reported, ‘Master, I invested
your money and made ten times the original amount!’

“‘Well done!’ the king exclaimed. ‘You are a good servant.
You have been faithful with the little I entrusted to you, so you
will be governor of ten cities as your reward.’

“The next servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and
made five times the original amount.’

“‘Well done!’ the king said. ‘You will be governor over five
cities.’

“But the third servant brought back only the original amount of
money and said, ‘Master, I hid your money and kept it safe.
21
I was afraid because you are a hard man to deal with, taking what
isn’t yours and harvesting crops you didn’t plant.’
22
“‘You wicked servant!’ the king roared. ‘Your own words
condemn you. If you knew that I’m a hard man who takes what isn’t
mine and harvests crops I didn’t plant,
23
why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have
gotten some interest on it.’
24
“Then, turning to the others standing nearby, the king ordered,
‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one who has
ten pounds.’
25
“‘But, master,’ they said, ‘he already has ten pounds!’
26
“‘Yes,’ the king replied, ‘and to those who use well what
they are given, even more will be given. But from those who do
nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.
27
And as for these enemies of mine who didn’t want me to be their
king—bring them in and execute them right here in front of me.’”

For I can testify that they gave not only what they could afford, but
far more. And they did it of their own free will.

They begged us again and again for the privilege of sharing in the
gift for the believers in Jerusalem.

They even did more than we had hoped, for their first action was to
give themselves to The Lord and to us, just as God wanted them to do.

So we have urged Titus, who encouraged your giving in the first
place, to return to you and encourage you to finish this ministry of
giving.

Since you excel in so many ways—in your faith, your gifted
speakers, your knowledge, your enthusiasm, and your love from us—I
want you to excel also in this gracious act of giving.

I am not commanding you to do this. But I am testing how genuine your
love is by comparing it with the eagerness of the other churches.

You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though He was
rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that by His poverty He
could make you rich.

Here is my advice: It would be good for you to finish what you
started a year ago. Last year you were the first who wanted to give,
and you were the first to begin doing it.
11
Now you should finish what you started. Let the eagerness you showed
in the beginning be matched now by your giving. Give in proportion to
what you have.
12
Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give
according to what you have, not what you don’t have.
13
Of course, I don’t mean your giving should make life easy for
others and hard for yourselves. I only mean that there should be some
equality.
14
Right now you have plenty and can help those who are in need. Later,
they will have plenty and can share with you when you need it. In
this way, things will be equal.
15
As the Scriptures say, “Those who gathered a lot had nothing left
over, and those who gathered only a little had enough.”

Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small
crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop.

You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give
reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who
gives cheerfully.”

And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always
have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.

As the Scriptures say, “They share freely and give generously to
the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.”

For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to
eat. In the same way, He will provide and increase your resources and
then produce a great harvest of generosity in you.
11
Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be
generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they
will thank God.
12
So two good things will result from this ministry of giving—the
needs of the believers in Jerusalem will be met, and they will
joyfully express their thanks to God.
13
As a result of your ministry, they will give glory to God. For your
generosity to them and to all believers will prove that you are
obedient to The Good News Of Christ.
14
And they will pray for you with deep affection because of the
overflowing grace God has given to you.
