 Bible Questions Answered:
“...it seems to me the god of the old testament is a harsh god of judgment, that Jesus is a god of love...”
Jack/ Lansing, Michigan U.S.A.

Bible Answer:

Bible Texts:

We must look more carefully!
Adam and Eve sinned, and were banished from the garden of Eden, but God in His great love made a way of escape for them.

Genesis 3:21 KJV
Unto Adam also and to his wife did The Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

God showed them, the first sacrifice for sin, the slaying of one of Abel's lambs. Adam and Eve went from being clothed with human ingenuity (fig leaves), which did not cover their sin, to God's clothing, the skin of a sacrificial lamb, God's covering, and God gave them the promise of a coming Redeemer!

Genesis 3:15 NLT
And I will cause hostility between you (the serpent) aand the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike His heel.”

How forgiving and loving our God is!

Yes because of their great rebellion, God judged Egypt with 10 plagues, but look at the love and mercy He displayed towards His people, making a way through the Red Sea, for their escape from Pharaoh's army !

Exodus 14:16 KJV
But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.

Then there were the days of Noah....

Genesis 6:5 KJV
And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

And of course, the result was judgment, but look at the love and mercy given by God to righteous Noah and his family!   He showed them how to build and ark, to survive the coming judgment.

Genesis 7:1 KJV
And The Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before Me in this generation.

Genesis 6:9-22 NLT (The Story of Noah)
9 This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.
10 Noah was the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence.
12 God observed all this corruption in the world, for everyone on earth was corrupt.
13 So God said to Noah, “I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth!
14 “Build a large boat from cypress wood and waterproof it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior.
15 Make the boat 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.
16 Leave an 18-inch opening below the roof all the way around the boat. Put the door on the side, and build three decks inside the boat—lower, middle, and upper.
17 “Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die.
18 But I will confirm My covenant with you. So enter the boat—you and your wife and your sons and their wives.
19 Bring a pair of every kind of animal—a male and a female—into the boat with you to keep them alive during the flood.
20 Pairs of every kind of bird, and every kind of animal, and every kind of small animal that scurries along the ground, will come to you to be kept alive.
21 And be sure to take on board enough food for your family and for all the animals.”
22 So Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him.

What great love and mercy, God not only provided for Noah and his family, but for the animals as well!

God's sending prophets to Israel, was His love and concern for His people.
God's Covenants, was because of His love and goodness.

Genesis 12:1-3 NLT (The Call of Abram)
1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.
2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others.
3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.”

II Samuel 7:11-16 NLT
11 "...Furthermore, The Lord declares that He will make a house for you—a dynasty of kings!
12 For when you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, your own offspring, and I will make his kingdom strong.
13 He is the one who will build a house—a temple—for My name. And I will secure his royal throne forever.
14 I will be his Father, and he will be My son. If he sins, I will correct and discipline him with the rod, like any father would do.
15 But My favor will not be taken from him as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from your sight.
16 Your house and your kingdom will continue before Me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.’”

Now concerning the New Testament, Jesus is a God of love...

Matthew 5:43-48 KJV
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for He maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
l
...but He did not hold back on judgment when speaking to the scribes and Pharisees!

Matthew 23:27,28,33 KJV
27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

Does God's character change from The Old Testament, to The New Testament?

Numbers 23:19 KJV
God is not a man, that He should lie; neither The son Of Man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?

Psalm 102:27 NLT
But you are always the same; you will live forever.

Isaiah 40:8 KJV
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but The Word Of Our God shall stand for ever.

Malachi 3:6 KJV
For I am The LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Matthew 24:35 KJV
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My Words shall not pass away.

Hebrews 1:12 NLT
"...you are always the same; you will live forever.”

Hebrews 13:8 KJV
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

James 1:17 NLT
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from The Father Of Lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Prayer:

Jeremiah 29:11 KJV
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith The Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
