Bible Lesson: Conversations With
Jesus: Pride And Contention.
Bible Text:
Luke 22:24-30
KJV
24 And there
was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the
greatest.
25 And He said
unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and
they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.
26 But ye shall
not be so. But he that is greatest among you, let him be as the
younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.
27 For whether
is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? Is not he
that sitteth at meat? But I am among you as He that serveth.
28 Ye are they
which have continued with Me in My temptations.
29 And I
appoint unto you a kingdom, as My Father hath appointed unto Me;
30 That ye may
eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging
the twelve tribes of Israel.
Luke 9:46 KJV
46 Then there
arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest
47 and Jesus,
perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by
Him,
48 Ad said unto
them, Whosoever shall receive this child in My name receiveth Me: and
whosoever shall receive Me receiveth Him that sent Me: for he that is
least among you all, the same shall be great.
The thoughts of the disciples, were fast and furious. If The Lord was
going away, who would take His place, and who was the greatest of the
disciples, that could?
Jesus then goes on to give them illustrations on humility.
Verse 25,26 NLT
25 Jesus told
them, “In this world the kings and great men order their people
around, and yet they are called “friends of the people.”
26 But among
you, those who are the greatest should take the lowest rank, and the
leader should be like a servant.
Our
Lord, kindly pointed out that the order of affairs in county, state
and country governments, are not to be compared to the kingdom of
heaven. In His church, Jesus told them, these things “shall
not be so. (vs. 26).
Second illustration of The Lord...
Verse 27:
For whether is
greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? Is not he that
sitteth at meat? But I am among you as He that serveth.
In the eyes of the world, the one sitting at supper, is the honored
one, while the others who wait upon his every like and dislike are
but hired servants.
But in The Lord's kingdom, it is the servant, who unselfishly,
untirely waits upon the guests, and there every need, who is the
greatest of all.
Well if rank or ecclesiastical position is not to be sought by them,
will they have any position in the next life? And Jesus replies, yes!
Verses 28-30:
28 Ye are they
which have continued with Me in My temptations (Trials-
NLT).
29 And I
appoint unto you a kingdom, as My Father hath appointed unto Me;
30 That ye may
eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging
the twelve tribes of Israel.
This promise has to do with our Lord's Second Coming, and His
millennial reign...
Verse 30:
That ye may eat
and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the
twelve tribes of Israel.
God's people, no matter who, or how they are, if humbly faithful,
will be rewarded.
Genesis 15:1 KJV
After these
things The Word Of The Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying,
fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
Psalm 19:9,11
KJV
9 The judgments
of The Lord are true and righteous altogether.
11 Moreover by
them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great
reward..
Revelation 22:12
KJV
And, behold, I
come quickly: and My reward is with Me, to give every man according
as his work shall be.
Prayer:
Proverbs 13:21
KJV
Evil pursueth
sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repaid.
Hebrews 10:35
NLT
Do not throw
away this confident trust in The Lord, no matter what happens
Remember the great reward it brings you!
