Bible Questions Answered:

“How are we supposed to pray for food?...”

Leticia/ San Diego, California U.S.A.

Bible Answer:

Bible Texts:

The Word:

Matthew 6:9-13 KJV

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Matthew 14:19 GNT

He ordered the people to sit down on the grass; then He took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, and gave thanks to God. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.

Matthew 15:36 KJV

And He took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to His disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

John 6:23 KJV

(Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that The Lord had given thanks:)

Acts 27:35 NLT (Apostle Paul)

Then he took some bread, gave thanks to God before them all, and broke off a piece and ate it.

I Corinthians 10:31 KJV

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Philippians 4:6,7 NLT

6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done.

7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Colossians 3:17 NLT

And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of The Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God The Father.

I Timothy 4:4,5 KJV

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

5 For it is sanctified by The Word Of God and prayer.

Yes we are to pray for our food, before we eat.

Illustration:

Years ago, my wife and I were out at a restaurant to eat, and we saw the most wonderful thing.

A group of 8 nuns had eater their meal and were done. They took one another's hands and sang a prayer of thanksgiving. It was not loud or disturbing, a song of thanks to The Lord, for His goodness.

Little do some know that The Lord also admonished His people to give thanks, “after they had eaten!”

Deuteronomy 8:10 KJV

When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless The Lord thy God for the good land which He hath given thee.

What is the proper order of pray for food? First thank The Father in heaven for His provision, and then after you have eaten and are full, give thanks again for all His kindness in caring for you.

Our God's name is Jehovah Jireh

Genesis 22:14 KJV

And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of The Lord it shall be seen.

Jehovah Jireh: The Lord will provide.

On Mount Moriah, Abraham offerred up a ram (provided by The Lord), instead of his son Isaac.

(Genesis 22:1-19)

Giving Thanks-the rest of the story:

Deuteronomy 8:10-20 KJV

10 When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the Lord thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.

11 Beware that thou forget not The Lord thy God, in not keeping His commandments, and His judgments, and His statutes, which I command thee this day:

12 Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;

13 And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;

14 Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget The Lord thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

15 Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;

16 Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that He might humble thee, and that He might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;

17 And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.

18 But thou shalt remember The Lord thy God: for it is He that giveth thee power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

19 And it shall be, if thou do at all forget The Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.

20 As the nations which The Lord destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of The Lord your God.

Should we pray at the end of a meal, as well as at the beginning, yes it helps us to remember, just where our blessings come from!

Prayer:

Psalm 92:1 KJV

It is a good thing to give thanks unto The Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High.
