Bible Lesson: Conversations With
Jesus: Christian Faith And Service.
Bible Text:
Luke 17:1-10 KJV
1 Then said He
unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offenses will come: but
woe unto him, through whom they come!
2 It were
better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he
cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little
ones.
3 Take heed to
yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if
he repent, forgive him.
4 And if he
trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day
turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.
5 And the
apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.
6 And The Lord
said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto
this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou
planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
7 But which of
you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by
and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat?
8 And will not
rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird
thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward
thou shalt eat and drink?
9 Doth he thank
that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I
trow not.
10 So likewise
ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you,
say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our
duty to do.
Bible Topic:
Christian Duty,
spelled out in five examples, here given by our Lord.
1)
Offenses:
How careful, we
must be, not to cause another to fall into sin.
Luke 17:1 NLT
Then said He
unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offenses will come: but
woe unto him, through whom they come!
Matthew 18:7-9 NLT
7 “What
sorrow awaits the world, because it tempts people to sin. Temptations
are inevitable, but what sorrow awaits the person who does the
tempting.
(Christ, here speaks metaphorically,
to illustrate, just how serious, this subject is.)
Metaphor:
A figure of speech
in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not
literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance, as in “A
mighty fortress is our God.”
8 So if your
hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It’s
better to enter eternal Life with only one hand or one foot than to
be thrown into eternal fire with both of your hands and feet.
9 And if your
eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It’s better
to enter eternal Life with only one eye than to have two eyes and be
thrown into the fire of hell.
Romans 14:21 NLT
It is better
not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything else if it might cause
another believer to stumble.
II Corinthians
6:3 NLT
We live in such
a way that no one will stumble because of us, and no one will find
fault with our ministry.
2)
Offending
Innocent Children;
Luke
17:1,2 NLT
1 Then said He
unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offenses will come: but
woe unto him, through whom they come!
2
It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck,
and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these
little ones.
Matthew 18:1-6,10 NLT (The Greatest in the
Kingdom)
1
About that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is
greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?”
2
Jesus called a little child to Him and put the child among them.
3
Then He said, “I tell you The Truth, unless you turn from your sins
and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom
of Heaven.
4
So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest
in the Kingdom of Heaven.
5
“And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on My behalf is
welcoming Me.
6
But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in Me to fall
into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied
around your neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea.
10
“Beware that you don’t look down on any of these little ones. For
I tell you that in heaven their angels are always in the presence of
My Heavenly Father.
3)
Forgiving Others:
Luke 17:3,4 NLT
3 Take heed to
yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if
he repent, forgive him.
4
And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times
in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive
him.
Matthew 18:21-35 NLT (Parable of the Unforgiving
Debtor)
21
Then Peter came to Him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive
someone who sins against me? Seven times?”
22
“No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven!
23
“Therefore, the Kingdom of Heaven can be compared to a king who
decided to bring his accounts up to date with servants who had
borrowed money from him.
24
In the process, one of his debtors was brought in who owed him
millions of dollars.
25
He couldn’t pay, so his master ordered that he be sold—along with
his wife, his children, and everything he owned—to pay the debt.
26
“But the man fell down before his master and begged him, ‘Please,
be patient with me, and I will pay it all.’
27
Then his master was filled with pity for him, and he released him and
forgave his debt.
28
“But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who
owed him a few thousand dollars. He grabbed him by the throat and
demanded instant payment.
29
“His fellow servant fell down before him and begged for a little
more time. ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it,’ he pleaded.
30
But his creditor wouldn’t wait. He had the man arrested and put in
prison until the debt could be paid in full.
31
“When some of the other servants saw this, they were very upset.
They went to the king and told him everything that had happened.
32
Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said, ‘You evil
servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with
me.
33
Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had
mercy on you?’
34
Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he
had paid his entire debt.
35
“That’s what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse
to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.”
4)
Increasing Faith:
Luke
17:5,6 NLT
5 And the
apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.
6
And The Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye
might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root,
and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
Mark
11:22-24 KJV
22
And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
23
For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this
mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall
not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he
saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
24
Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray,
believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
Romans
10:17 KJV
So
then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by The Word Of God.
I
John 5:4 KJV
For
whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the
victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
5)
Duty Of Servants:
Luke
17:7-10 NLT
7 But which of
you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by
and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat?
8 And will not
rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird
thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward
thou shalt eat and drink?
9 Doth he thank
that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I
trow not.
10
So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are
commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that
which was our duty to do.
Deuteronomy
10:12 KJV
And
now, Israel, what doth The Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear
The Lord thy God, to walk in all His ways, and to love Him, and to
serve The Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
Ephesians
6:5 KJV
Servants,
be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh,
with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;
Colossians
3:23 KJV
And
whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to The Lord, and not unto men;
Hebrews
12:28 KJV
Wherefore
we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace,
whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and Godly fear:
Prayer:
Ephesians
5:15-20 NLT
15
So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those
who are wise.
16
Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.
17
Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what The Lord wants you to
do.
18
Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life.
Instead, be filled with The Holy Spirit,
19
singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and
making music to The Lord in your hearts.
20
And give thanks for everything to God The Father in the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ.
