Bible Answer:
Bible Texts:
Unfruitful or barren lives, have no reward.
The
Word:
Matthew 13:1-23 NLT (Parable of the Farmer
Scattering Seed)
1
Later that same day Jesus left the house and sat beside the lake.
2
A large crowd soon gathered around Him, so He got into a boat. Then
He sat there and taught as the people stood on the shore.
3
He told many stories in the form of parables, such as this one:
“Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds.
4
As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath,
and the birds came and ate them.
5
Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seeds
sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow.
6
But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn’t
have deep roots, they died.
7
Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender
plants.
8
Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop that
was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been
planted!
9
Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”
10
His disciples came and asked Him, “Why do you use parables when you
talk to the people?”
11
He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secrets of the
Kingdom of Heaven, but others are not.
12
To those who listen to My teaching, more understanding will be given,
and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But for those who are
not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken
away from them.
13
That is why I use these parables, For they look, but they don’t
really see. They hear, but they don’t really listen or understand.
14
This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah that says, ‘When you hear what
I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not
comprehend.
15
For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot
hear, and they have closed their eyes— so their eyes cannot see,
and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and
they cannot turn to Me and let Me heal them.’
16
“But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears,
because they hear.
17 I tell you The Truth, many prophets and righteous
people longed to see what you see, but they didn’t see it.
And they longed to hear what you hear, but they didn’t hear it.
18
“Now listen to the explanation of the parable about the farmer
planting seeds:
19
The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the
message about the Kingdom and don’t understand it. Then the evil
one comes and snatches away the seed that was planted in their
hearts.
20
The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and
immediately receive it with joy.
21
But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They
fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for
believing God’s Word.
22
The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God’s
word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries
of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced
(unfruitful-KJV).
23
The seed that fell on good soil represents those who truly hear and
understand God’s Word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or
even a hundred times as much as had been planted!”
Mark
4:18,19 NLT
18
The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who hear God’s
Word,
19
but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this
life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no
fruit is produced ("it becometh unfruitful.-KJV).
I
Corinthians 14:14,15 KJV
14
For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my
understanding is unfruitful.
15
What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with
the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing
with the understanding also.
Ephesians
5:10-14 NLT
10
Carefully determine what pleases The Lord.
11
Take no part in the worthless (unruitful-KJV) deeds of evil and
darkness; instead, expose them.
12
It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do
in secret.
13
But their evil intentions will be exposed when The Light shines on
them,
14
for The Light makes everything visible..."
Titus
3:14 NLT
Our
people must learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others;
then they will not be unproductive (unfruitful-KJV).
II
Peter 1:5-8 KJV
5
And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and
to virtue knowledge;
6
And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to
patience Godliness;
7
And to Godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness
charity.
8
For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye
shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
God's gifts and our responsibility:
Matthew 25:14-30 NLT (Parable of the Three
Servants)
14
“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a
man going on a long trip. He called together his servants and
entrusted his money to them while he was gone.
15
He gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another,
and one bag of silver to the last—dividing it in proportion to
their abilities. He then left on his trip.
16
“The servant who received the five bags of silver began to invest
the money and earned five more.
17
The servant with two bags of silver also went to work and earned two
more.
18
But the servant who received the one bag of silver dug a hole in the
ground and hid the master’s money.
19
“After a long time their master returned from his trip and called
them to give an account of how they had used his money. 20 The
servant to whom he had entrusted the five bags of silver came forward
with five more and said, ‘Master, you gave me five bags of silver
to invest, and I have earned five more.’
21
“The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful
servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now
I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate
together!’
22
“The servant who had received the two bags of silver came forward
and said, ‘Master, you gave me two bags of silver to invest, and I
have earned two more.’
23
“The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You
have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give
you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’
24
“Then the servant with the one bag of silver came and said,
‘Master, I knew you were a harsh man, harvesting crops you didn’t
plant and gathering crops you didn’t cultivate.
25
I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth. Look,
here is your money back.’
26
“But the master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy servant! If you
knew I harvested crops I didn’t plant and gathered crops I didn’t
cultivate,
27
why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have
gotten some interest on it.’
28
“Then he ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it
to the one with the ten bags of silver.
29
To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given,
and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even
what little they have will be taken away.
30
Now throw this useless servant into outer darkness, where there will
be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Timothy 1:6,7 NLT
6
This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God
gave you when I laid my hands on you.
7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power,
love, and self-discipline.
