Bible Lesson: Messianic
Prophecies, Fulfilled, In Jesus Christ. Christ's Galilean Ministry.
Bible Text:
Prophecy:
Isaiah 9:1,2 NLT B.C. 740
1 Nevertheless, that time of
darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and
Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when
Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between
the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory.
2 The people who walk in darkness
will see A Great Light. For those who live in a land of deep
darkness, A Light will shine.
Fulfillment:
Mark 4:1-20 NLT A.D. 31
(Parable of the Farmer Scattering Seed)
1 Once again Jesus began teaching by
the lake shore (Galilee).
A very large crowd soon gathered around Him, so He got into a boat.
Then He sat in the boat while all the people remained on the shore.
2 He taught them by telling many
stories in the form of parables, such as this one:
3 “Listen! A farmer went out to
plant some seed.
4 As he scattered it across his
field, some of the seed fell on a footpath, and the birds came and
ate it.
5 Other seed fell on shallow soil
with underlying rock. The seed sprouted quickly because the soil was
shallow.
6 But the plant soon wilted under
the hot sun, and since it didn’t have deep roots, it died.
7 Other seed fell among thorns that
grew up and choked out the tender plants so they produced no grain.
8 Still other seeds fell on fertile
soil, and they sprouted, grew, and produced a crop that was thirty,
sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted!”
9 Then He said, “Anyone with ears
to hear should listen and understand.”
10 Later, when Jesus was alone with
the twelve disciples and with the others who were gathered around,
they asked Him what the parables meant.
11 He replied, “You are permitted
to understand the secret of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables
for everything I say to outsiders,
12 so that The Scriptures might be
fulfilled: ‘When they see what I do, they will learn nothing. When
they hear what I say, they will not understand. Otherwise, they will
turn to Me and be forgiven.’”
13 Then Jesus said to them, “If
you can’t understand the meaning of this parable, how will you
understand all the other parables?
14 The farmer plants seed by taking
God’s Word to others.
15 The seed that fell on the
footpath represents those who hear The Message, only to have Satan
come at once and take it away.
16 The seed on the rocky soil
represents those who hear The Message and immediately receive it with
joy.
17 But since they don’t have deep
roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have
problems or are persecuted for believing God’s Word.
18 The seed that fell among the
thorns represents others who hear God’s Word,
19 but all too quickly The Message
is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and
the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced.
20 And the seed that fell on good
soil represents those who hear
and accept God’s Word and produce a harvest of thirty,
sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!”
Verse 12, looks as
though The Lord, doesn't want people to be saved, but how careful we
must be in reading The Word! Our Lord was speaking to those who had
committed the unpardonable sin, of calling the works of The Lord,
works of Satan.
The Word:
Matthew 12:22-37
NLT (Jesus and the Prince of Demons)
22 Then a demon-possessed man, who
was blind and couldn’t speak, was brought to Jesus. He healed the
man so that he could both speak and see.
23 The crowd was amazed and asked,
“Could it be that Jesus is The Son of David, The Messiah?”
24 But when the Pharisees heard
about the miracle, they said, “No wonder He can cast out demons. He
gets His power from Satan, the prince of demons.”
25 Jesus knew their thoughts and
replied, “Any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed. A town or
family splintered by feuding will fall apart.
26 And if Satan is casting out
Satan, he is divided and fighting against himself. His own kingdom
will not survive.
27 And if I am empowered by Satan,
what about your own exorcists? They cast out demons, too, so they
will condemn you for what you have said.
28 But if I am casting out demons by
The Spirit Of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you.
29 For who is powerful enough to
enter the house of a strong man and plunder his goods? Only someone
even stronger—someone who could tie him up and then plunder his
house.
30 “Anyone who isn’t with Me
opposes Me, and anyone who isn’t working with Me is actually
working against Me.
31 “So I tell you, every sin and
blasphemy can be forgiven—except blasphemy against The Holy Spirit,
which will never be forgiven.
32 Anyone who speaks against The Son
Of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against The Holy Spirit
will never be forgiven, either in this world or in the world to come.
33 “A tree is identified by its
fruit. If a tree is good, its fruit will be good. If a tree is bad,
its fruit will be bad.
34 You brood of snakes! How could
evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in
your heart determines what you say.
35 A good person produces good
things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces
evil things from the treasury of an evil heart.
36 And I tell you this, you must
give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak.
37 The words you say will either
acquit you or condemn you.”
Matthew 23:1-38
NLT (Jesus Criticizes the Religious Leaders)
1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and
to His disciples,
2 “The teachers of religious law
and the Pharisees are the official interpreters of the law of Moses.
3 So practice and obey whatever they
tell you, but don’t follow their example. For they don’t practice
what they teach.
4 They crush people with unbearable
religious demands and never lift a finger to ease the burden.
5 “Everything they do is for show.
On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses
inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels.
6 And they love to sit at the head
table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues.
7 They love to receive respectful
greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi.’
8 “Don’t let anyone call you
‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one teacher, and all of you are equal
as brothers and sisters.
9 And don’t address anyone here on
earth as ‘Father,’ for only God in heaven is your Father.
10 And don’t let anyone call you
‘Teacher,’ for you have only one teacher, the Messiah.
11 The greatest among you must be a
servant.
12 But those who exalt themselves
will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
13 “What sorrow awaits you
teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut
the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go
in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either.
15 “What sorrow awaits you
teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you
cross land and sea to make one convert, and then you turn that person
into twice the child of hell you yourselves are!
16 “Blind guides! What sorrow
awaits you! For you say that it means nothing to swear ‘by God’s
Temple,’ but that it is binding to swear ‘by the gold in the
Temple.’
17 Blind fools! Which is more
important—the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred?
18 And you say that to swear ‘by
the altar’ is not binding, but to swear ‘by the gifts on the
altar’ is binding.
19 How blind! For which is more
important—the gift on the altar or the altar that makes the gift
sacred?
20 When you swear ‘by the altar,’
you are swearing by it and by everything on it.
21 And when you swear ‘by the
Temple,’ you are swearing by it and by God, who lives in it.
22 And when you swear ‘by heaven,’
you are swearing by The Throne Of God and by God, who sits on The
Throne.
23 “What sorrow awaits you
teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are
careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but
you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy,
and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more
important things.
24 Blind guides! You strain your
water so you won’t accidentally swallow a gnat, but you swallow a
camel!
25 “What sorrow awaits you
teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are
so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside
you are filthy—full of greed and self-indulgence!
26 You blind Pharisee! First wash
the inside of the cup and the dish, and then the outside will become
clean, too.
27 “What sorrow awaits you
teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are
like white washed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the
inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity.
28 Outwardly you look like righteous
people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and
lawlessness.
29 “What sorrow awaits you
teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you
build tombs for the prophets your ancestors killed, and you decorate
the monuments of the Godly people your ancestors destroyed.
30 Then you say, ‘If we had lived
in the days of our ancestors, we would never have joined them in
killing the prophets.’
31 “But in saying that, you
testify against yourselves that you are indeed the descendants of
those who murdered the prophets.
32 Go ahead and finish what your
ancestors started.
33 Snakes! Sons of vipers! How will
you escape the judgment of hell?
34 “Therefore, I am sending you
prophets and wise men and teachers of religious law. But you will
kill some by crucifixion, and you will flog others with whips in your
synagogues, chasing them from city to city.
35 As a result, you will be held
responsible for the murder of all Godly people of all time—from the
murder of righteous Abel to the murder of Zechariah son of Berekiah,
whom you killed in the Temple between the sanctuary and the altar.
36 I tell you The Truth, this
judgment will fall on this very generation.
(Jesus Grieves over
Jerusalem)
37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the
city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often
I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her
chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let Me.
38 And now, look, your house is
abandoned and desolate.
39 For I tell you this, you will
never see Me again until you say, ‘Blessings on the one who comes
in the name of The Lord!’”
Galilean
Rejection:
Matthew 13:53-58
NLT (Jesus Rejected at Nazareth)
53 When Jesus had finished telling
these stories and illustrations, He left that part of the country.
54 He returned to Nazareth, His
hometown. When He taught there in the synagogue, everyone was amazed
and said, “Where does He get this wisdom and the power to do
miracles?”
55 Then they scoffed, “He’s just
the carpenter’s Son, and we know Mary, His mother, and His
brothers—James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas. 56 All His sisters live
right here among us. Where did He learn all these things?”
57 And they were deeply offended and
refused to believe in Him. Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is
honored everywhere except in His own hometown and among His own
family.”
58 And so He did only a few miracles
there because of their unbelief.
Luke 4:14-30 NLT
(Jesus Rejected at Nazareth)
14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee,
filled with The Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about Him spread
quickly through the whole region.
15 He taught regularly in their
synagogues and was praised by everyone.
16 When He came to the village of
Nazareth, His boyhood home, He went as usual to the synagogue on the
Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.
17 The scroll of Isaiah the prophet
was handed to Him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where
this was written:
18 “The Spirit Of The Lord is upon
Me, for He has anointed Me to bring Good News to the poor. He has
sent Me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind
will see, that the oppressed will be set free,
19 and that the time of The Lord’s
favor has come.”
20 He rolled up the scroll, handed
it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue
looked at Him intently.
21 Then He began to speak to them.
“The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very
day!”
22 Everyone spoke well of Him and
was amazed by the gracious words that came from His lips. “How can
this be?” they asked. “Isn’t this Joseph’s Son?”
23 Then He said, “You will
undoubtedly quote Me this proverb: ‘Physician, heal
yourself’—meaning, ‘Do miracles here in your hometown like
those you did in Capernaum.’
24 But I tell you The Truth, no
prophet is accepted in his own hometown.
25 “Certainly there were many
needy widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were
closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the
land.
26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of
them. He was sent instead to a foreigner—a widow of Zarephath in
the land of Sidon.
27 And many in Israel had leprosy in
the time of the prophet Elisha, but the only one healed was Naaman, a
Syrian.”
28 When they heard this, the people
in the synagogue were furious. 29 Jumping up, they mobbed Him and
forced Him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They
intended to push Him over the cliff,
30 but He passed right through the
crowd and went on His way.
John 4:43-45 KJV
43 Now after two days He departed
thence, and went into Galilee.
44 For Jesus Himself testified, that
a prophet hath no honor in his own country.
45 Then when He was come into
Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things that
He did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
Prayer:
Romans 5:6-11
NLT
6 When we were utterly helpless,
Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.
7 Now, most people would not be
willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be
willing to die for a person who is especially good.
8 But God showed His great love for
us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
9 And since we have been made right
in God’s sight by The Blood Of Christ, He will certainly save us
from God’s condemnation.
10 For since our friendship with God
was restored by the death of His Son while we were still His enemies,
we will certainly be saved through the life of His Son.
11 So now we can rejoice in our
wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has
made us friends of God.
