Bible Lesson: Conversations With Jesus: The Tradition Of The Elders.

Bible Texts:

Matthew 15:1-20 KJV

Mark 7:1-23 KJV

Bible Topic:

Matthew 15:1-20 KJV

1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,

2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

3 But He answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

4 For God commanded, saying, Honor thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;

6 And honor not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias (Isaiah) prophesy of you, saying,

8 This people draweth nigh unto Me with their mouth, and honoreth Me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me.

9 But in vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

10 And He called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:

11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

12 Then came His disciples, and said unto Him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?

13 But He answered and said, Every plant, which My Heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.

14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

15 Then answered Peter and said unto Him, Declare unto us this parable.

16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?

17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?

18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashed hands defileth not a man.

Mark 7:1-23 NLT

1 One day some Pharisees and teachers of religious law arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus.

2 They noticed that some of His disciples failed to follow the Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating.

3 (The Jews, especially the Pharisees, do not eat until they have poured water over their cupped hands, as required by their ancient traditions.

4 Similarly, they don’t eat anything from the market until they immerse their hands in water. This is but one of many traditions they have clung to—such as their ceremonial washing of cups, pitchers, and kettles.

5 So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law asked him, “Why don’t your disciples follow our age-old tradition? They eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony.”

6 Jesus replied, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.

7 Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’

8 For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.”

9 Then He said, “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition.

10 For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’

11 But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’

12 In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents.

13 And so you cancel The Word Of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others.”

14 Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “All of you listen,” He said, “and try to understand.

15 It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart.”

17 Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowd, and His disciples asked Him what He meant by the parable He had just used.

18 “Don’t you understand either?” He asked. “Can’t you see that the food you put into your body cannot defile you?

19 Food doesn’t go into your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.” (By saying this, He declared that every kind of food is acceptable in God’s eyes.)

20 And then He added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you.

21 For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder,

22 adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.

23 All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.”

Mark 7:7-9 NLT

7 Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’

8 For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.”

9 Then He said, “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition.

How reminiscent these words are of Matthew 7:21-23 KJV.

Matthew 7:21-23 KJV (Jesus speaking)

21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven.

22 Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity.

Dear Lord, how could this holy saints and angels church (apocryphal), be a worker of iniquity?

Oh they said, Lord, Lord, but they taught the traditions of men. They prophesied, they performed exorcisms, in the name of the Lord, and did great religious works, but they did not do, the will of The Lord. Matter of fact, it is stated in their seminary, that their church, is “not,” based upon The Bible, but tradition.

This church, and its adherents, do not live by being saved by grace...

Ephesians 2:8 KJV

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is The Gift Of God:

Titus 3:4-7 NLT

4 But—When God our Savior revealed His kindness and love,

5 He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through The Holy Spirit.

6 He generously poured out The Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior.

7 Because of His grace He made us right in His sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal Life.

This church, and its adherents, does not live by obedience to The Word.

Mark 7:7-9 NLT

7 Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.

8 For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.”

9 Then He said, “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition.

Mark 7:7-9 KJV

7 Howbeit in vain do they worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men..."

9 And He said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

Matthew 7:23 KJV

... depart from Me, ye that work iniquity.”

Our Lord, called them workers of iniquity, because, not only were they “lost,”but they were leading other people, to perdition, through their falsehoods.

Beautiful stained glass windows, grand pipe organs, with beautifully arrayed antiphonal choirs, seemingly ascending one to the very heights of heaven, but alas, tis “not,” so.

Matthew 15:9 KJV

But in vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Question:

If this church, teaches, the traditions of men, as doctrine, why, why would they bother calling upon the name of The Lord?

Answer:

To appear that they are as any other church, but they are not, and how do we know that, our blessed Lord has warned us, telling us so!

True salvation, not by pious workings of man, but by the shed blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

John 1;12,13 KJV

12 But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name:

13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

How can we know if our church, is a church that follows the traditions of men, or if it is one that holds strictly to the inerrant, Word Of God.

We can know that by reading and reading again The Word Of God, for our selves!

(Read it first in the Godly – King James Version)

Acts 17:10,11 KJV

10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received The Word with all readiness of mind, and searched The Scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Acts 17:10,11 NLT

10 That very night the believers sent Paul and Silas to Berea. When they arrived there, they went to the Jewish synagogue.

11 And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched The Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching The Truth.

John 5:39 KJV

Search The Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal Life: and they are they which testify of Me.

How Firm A Foundation

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,

Is laid for your faith in His excellent word!

What more can He say than to you He hath said—

To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

“Fear not, I am with thee, oh, be not dismayed,

For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;

I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,

Upheld by My gracious, omnipotent hand.

“When through the deep waters I call thee to go,

The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;

For I will be with thee thy trouble to bless,

And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

“When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,

My grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply;

The flame shall not harm thee; I only design

Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine.

“The soul that on Jesus doth lean for repose,

I will not, I will not, desert to his foes;

That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,

I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.”

Prayer:

John 6:37,40,47 KJV

37 “...him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out.”

40 And this is the will of Him that sent Me, that every one which seeth The Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting Life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on Me hath everlasting Life.
