Theologians say this verse more properly rendered should read..."it
was not the season for gathering figs."
In Judea, summer begins in March, and harvest begins at Passover.
This was a time of more than ripe figs, but not yet a time of
harvesting them.
A
fig tree has figs, if the leaves of the tree are seen, because, a fig
tree has its fruit first, then come the leaves.
To see a fig tree flourishing with leaves, meant it was full of figs.
And yet, appearances may be deceiving.
