Bible Lesson: Conversations With Jesus: The Madness Of Asking For Signs.

Bible Text:

Matthew 12:38-40 KJV
38 Then certain of the Scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
39 But He answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall The Son Of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Bible Topic:

Demanding Signs:

Matthew 16:1-4 KJV
1 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired Him that He would shew them a sign from heaven.
2 He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.
3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?
4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And He left them, and departed.

Mark 8:11,12 KJV
11 And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with Him, seeking of Him a sign from heaven, tempting Him.
12 And He sighed deeply in His Spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

Luke 11:16,29-32 NLT
16 Others, trying to test Jesus, demanded that He show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove His authority.

(The Sign of Jonah)

29 As the crowd pressed in on Jesus, He said, “This evil generation keeps asking Me to show them a miraculous sign. But the only sign I will give them is the sign of Jonah.
30 What happened to him was a sign to the people of Nineveh that God had sent him. What happens to The Son Of Man will be a sign to these people that He was sent by God.
31 “The queen of Sheba will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here—but you refuse to listen.
32 The people of Nineveh will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here—but you refuse to repent.

Luke 12:54-56 KJV
54 And He said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is.
55 And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.
56 Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?

Luke 23:8 KJV
And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see Him of a long season, because he had heard many things of Him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by Him.

John 2:18 KJV
Then answered the Jews and said unto Him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

John 4:48 KJV
Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

John 6:30 KJV
They said therefore unto Him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?

I Corinthians 1:22 KJV
For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

The Scribes and the Pharisees, sought after a sign, but Jesus said “ An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:”

Actually the Scribes and the Pharisees, had rejected all the signs they had seen from The Lord.

From His very birth, our Lord's life had been filled with signs, and yet they were signs the Scribes and Pharisees had rejected.
Signs were often used in the Old Testament, and Jesus, was not against their use?

Mark 16:14-20 KJV
14 Afterward He appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen Him after He was risen.
15 And He said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach The Gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
19 So then after The Lord had spoken unto them, He was received up into heaven, and sat on The Right Hand Of God.
20 And they went forth, and preached every where, The Lord working with them, and confirming The Word with signs following. Amen.

How spiritually dangerous it is, to reject The Lord Jesus and His work.

Hebrews 10:31 KJV
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of The Living God.

So what's the answer?

I John 5:4 KJV
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

Faith Is The Victory

Encamped along the hills of light,
Ye Christian soldiers, rise,
And press the battle ere the night
Shall veil the glowing skies.
Against the foe in vales below
Let all our strength be hurled;
Faith is the victory, we know,
That overcomes the world.

Chorus:
Faith is the victory!
Faith is the victory!
Oh, glorious victory,
That overcomes the world.

His banner over us is love,
Our sword The Word Of God;
We tread the road the saints above
With shouts of triumph trod.
By faith, they like a whirlwind’s breath,
Swept on o’er every field;
The faith by which they conquered death
Is still our shining shield.

On every hand the foe we find
Drawn up in dread array;
Let tents of ease be left behind,
And onward to the fray.
Salvation’s helmet on each head,
With truth all girt about,
The earth shall tremble ’neath our tread,
And echo with our shout.

To him that overcomes the foe,
White raiment shall be giv’n;
Before the angels he shall know
His name confessed in heav’n.
Then onward from the hills of light,
Our hearts with love aflame,
We’ll vanquish all the hosts of night,
In Jesus’ conqu’ring name.

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

Acts 16:30,31 KJV

31 And they said, Believe on The Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
