Bible Questions Answered:
What is mortify?...”
Liz/ Cary, Illinois U.S.A.

Bible Answer:

Bible Text:

Mortify:
To subjugate (the body, passions, etc.) by abstinence, ascetic discipline, or self-inflicted suffering.
(Dictionary.Com)

Mortify:
To subdue and bring under control by self-denial, disciplinary exercises, etc
(CollinsDictionary.Com)

Romans 8:12,13 KJV
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through The Spirit do mortify* the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

*Mortify-Greek: Thanatoo (Than-at-o-o): To kill (lit. or fig.): become dead (cause to be) put to death, kill, mortify.

Romans 8:12,13 NLT
12 Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.
13 For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of The Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.

Colossians 3:1-6 KJV
1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on
The Right Hand Of God.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
4 When Christ, who is our Life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with Him in glory.
5 Mortify* therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

*Mortify-Greek: Nekroo-(Nek-ro-o): To deaden, to subdue:-be dead, mortify.

Colossians 3:1-6 NLT
1 Since you have been raised to new Life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s Right Hand.
2 Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.
3 For you died to this life, and your real Life is hidden with Christ in God.
4 And when Christ, who is your Life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all His glory.
5 So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.
6 Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming

Romans 8:13 KJV
but if ye through The Spirit do mortify* the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

This is not some passive action, but very much an active volition on our part. And notice that, we can only be successful at this, daily, spiritual mortification, through the power of God's Spirit.

Not mind or matter etc. it is an action of God's Spirit, through our willingness, through The Word, to be as our Lord, that we are changed

II Corinthians 3:18 KJV
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of The Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by The Spirit Of The Lord.

Mortifying The Deeds Of The Flesh:

Galatians 5:16-26 NLT (Living by The Spirit’s Power)
16 So I say, let The Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.
17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what The Spirit wants. And The Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.
18 But when you are directed by The Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.
19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures,
20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division,
21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
22 But The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!
24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to His cross and crucified them there.
25 Since we are living by She Spirit, let us follow The Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.
26 Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.

Acts 2:21,38 KJV
21 “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of The Lord shall be saved.”
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive The Gift Of The Holy Ghost.

Baptism, speaks of the death and resurrection of our Savior, The Lord Jesus Christ.
When we are, immersed in baptism, it speaks of death of the sinful natural man, and the resurrection of new resurrected spiritual Life, through The Lord Jesus.

Romans 6:3-13 KJV
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death?
4 Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of
The Father, even so we also should walk in newness of Life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him:
9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over Him.
10 For in that He died, He died unto sin once: but in that He liveth, He liveth unto God.
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

Romans 7:4 NLT
So, my dear brothers and sisters, this is the point: You died to the power of the law when you died with Christ. And now you are united with The One who was raised from the dead. As a result, we can produce a harvest of good deeds for God.

I Corinthians 12:13 KJV
Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.

Galatians 2:20 NLT
My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in The Son Of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Galatians 3:26-29 NLT
26 For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
27 And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.
28 There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are His heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.

Galatians 5:24,25 NLT
24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to His cross and crucified them there.
25 Since we are living by The Spirit, let us follow The Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

Colossians 2:12,20 NLT
12 For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new Life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.
20 You have died with Christ, and He has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world..."

Colossians 3:2,3 KJV
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

II Timothy 2:11 NLT
This is a trustworthy saying: If we die with Him, we will also live with Him.

Romans 8:12,13 KJV
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through The Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Prayer:

I John 5:1,11-13 KJV
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is The Christ has become a child of God..."
11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
12 He that hath The Son hath Life; and he that hath not The Son Of God hath not Life.
13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of The Son Of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal Life, and that ye may believe on the name of The Son Of God.
